Like river rides, canal rides hold the promise of generally very easy cycling and easy navigation, allowing to cover long distances pretty quickly – especially if you have an e-bike.
Unlike rivers their charms are often in the craft that sail on them and ingenuity and individual nature of the engineering feats along the way, including a bewildering number and variety of locks and bridges.
Some, like the Gota Canal, are havens for wildlife, whilst others like Germany’s Kiel canal are jaw-dropping spectacles of the man-made kind.

Last week a group of four men with artificial hearts completed a 27 mile ride on e-bikes on the Dark Peak 3 Reservoirs Cycle Trail in the UK Peak District.
Collectively they call themselves The Cranks Electric Cycling Club and regularly ride 20-30 miles together.
They are either waiting for new hearts or enjoying life to the max with no hope of one.

It’s a common perception in cycling circles that the Netherlands is the best cycling destination in the world; traffic-free well-signed routes guide you across this relatively small country where distances between attractions and stop-offs are small.

I’ve already covered an e-bike camping trip taking plenty of gear to make me comfortable in this post and this post.
For this second trip I took a Haibike Sduro Trekking 4.0 which looked a good choice on paper and a Radical Design Chubby trailer (reviewed here) to enable me to carry more gear than last time (and the Chubby also packed down well, as some train travel was involved).
An e-cargo bike would be a great alternative for heavy duty camping trips like this but as they are not allowed on UK trains one wasn’t suitable for this particular trip.
I’d planned a three night break for myself and brother with even more creature comforts than last time, including a much bigger tent, the ability to cook basic meals and a solar-powered LED lighting and charging with the HUBi 2K from Solar technology.
