I lost my cycling fitness overnight. Having ridden 100+ miles a week for years, I struggled after two, breathing hard, short of breath.
I couldn’t go on. I returned home, taking the flattest way, even cutting through a neighbor’s yard to avoid the 10-degree grade to my hilltop home.
The fatigue, I thought, might be related to a recent medication change. My doctor stopped that, but my energy and ability never returned. He ordered a blood test. He called the next day.
“You’re not going on vacation tomorrow. You’re seeing the head of blood cancers on Monday.” “Can’t it wait a week?” “No!”
Monday came. The doctor seemed nervous. He didn’t know me but had news to break. He told me plainly: “You have leukemia. Where do you want to be admitted?” [Read more…]
Mid-drive motor folding e-bikes are pretty rare and ones with the highly-rated Gates carbon belt drive even rarer, so it was a pleasure to check out this take on just such a thing, courtesy of UK company Volt.
From being a humble startup several years ago, Volt are now one of the most widely distributed e-bike brands in the UK.
Whilst this has been based on affordable yet good quality hub motor machines in the past, the fruits of Volt’s collaborative efforts with Shimano are now bearing fruit in the form of this funky looking mid-drive e-folder, the Axis.
The Volt Axis is priced at £2999.00.

Panasonic 2-speed Mid-drive Now Award Nominated
Of the various e-bike contenders for the Dutch based 2017 Fiets Awards one caught our eye.
The speed pedelec FLYER U-series utilises a 2-speed Panasonic motor with manual and automatic switching options; in theory this should give a much wider range of speeds over which the motor can operate efficiently, which could in theory mean greater range, greater climbing ability and more assistance at speed.
Panasonic and Flyer class it as a ‘world-first’ so it will be interesting to see just how it fares at the awards.
See the summary video below to get a feel for the features and operation of the system. [Read more…]

Specialized will expand its Vado road range for 2017. They will now use the same Brose mid-motor as their e-MTB Turbo Levo range.
The Turbo Vado will pack a 500Wh battery whilst the Vado Comp will use a 600Wh pack and is a speed pedelec version (for the purposes of European law at least).
