The all new 2018 Rad Power Bikes RadWagon electric cargo bike is in for testing & review!

This is an economical eCargo bike with a high capacity 48V 14ah lithium battery, 750 watt direct drive motor, sturdy aluminum frame, disc brakes, and a lot of accessory options.

The RadWagon is priced at $1,499 with free shipping (lower 48 states) and they have monthly payment options as well.

Rad Power Bikes recently started selling their eBikes in Canada and select European markets.

Research Finds eBiking Replaces Car Trips

A report for the Portland, OR based National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC) shows that e-bike users are increasingly replacing car use with e-bikes. 

The research published last month found, “The majority of the utilitarian trips (i.e., errands and commutes) being made by e-bike are replacing motor vehicle trips, which signifies an impressive decrease in vehicle miles traveled.”

The research involved a survey of 1,759 e-bike users and owners across the United States, and it also found that people who might not use traditional bikes due to age and physical disability are using e-bikes, and that there is a perception of increased safety on e-bikes.  [Read more…] about Research Finds eBiking Replaces Car Trips

Shopping & Commuting with an Electric Cargo Bike: The Riese & Müller Packster 40 NuVinci

Living in a rural area means a big shop at the nearest large town, several very hilly miles away, is a job taylor-made for an e-cargo bike.

Enter Riese & Müller’s Packster 40 Nuvinci (from $6,219) which looked to fit the task perfectly. So when I was offered a trial I couldn’t wait to see how it handled shopping trips into town and city.

The first thing I notice about the bike is nothing to do with the riding – it lifts over a large step and a threshold into a building with only one (strong-ish) person grasping it by the middle of the frame.

At around 77 pounds (35kg) with the batteries removed (88 pounds (40 kg) with 2 batteries included) of course it’s no lightweight, but it does show how much more practical this compact, well-balanced design is than heavier e-cargo bikes.

First Look – Gecko’s New Puncture Proof Bike Tires. No More Flat Tires!

UK company Gecko have just been released their new ‘Regular’ branded tyres on 700 x 40 and 26 x  1.75 sizes.

We’ve tried these tyres before in their Comfort range (a little softer than the regular range and made specifically for e-bikes).

I have just headed over to York’s Electric Transport Shop to try some of the free-rolling 700 x 40 sized new Regular Geckos.

Although Gecko say they are suitable for non electric bikes I thought it would be great to try them out on an e-bike and to compare them to the softer Comfort versions we have on long term test on our Heinzmann e-bike.  [Read more…] about First Look – Gecko’s New Puncture Proof Bike Tires.
