Trip Report: Touring France on an Electric Bike

After 520 miles of e-biking, many tens of baguettes, lots of pavement cafe stops and many fabulous chateaux visits I had finally made it across France, from the far northern ferry port of Calais, to the outstanding tourist attraction in France outside of Paris – the jaw-droppingly impressive abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel.

East London’s Waltham Forest Council are funding a free local delivery service by e-cargo bike or hybrid van paid for by the paid for by the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund.

It looked to be off to a good start, with Road.cc reporting that 300 parcels had initially been delivered in three days.

Quantifying Bicycles’ Economic Contribution

The U.S. House of Representatives have just passed the Outdoor REC (Recreation’s Economic Contributions) Act, moving it one step closer to being signed into law by the president.

As suggested by its title, The Outdoor REC Act would require the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Labor, working with federal land management agencies, to provide statistics on the economic contribution of recreation to the U.S. economy – and that inlcudes bikes’ and e-bike’s contribution. 

People for Bikes said: 

‘We believe it is time for the bike industry’s economic statistics to be measured in the same way as other sectors such as the automobile, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Measuring the economic benefits of bicycling will demonstrate that investment in bike infrastructure leads to economic development, jobs and healthier communities. eBike News: Affordable Gocycle, Wireless Solar Charging, N.A. eBike Tour, & More! [VIDEO]

Gocycle is a well-known name in the US and the UK where it was invented and they have recently taken to Kickstarter with a US goal of raising $250,000 to introduce the GoCycle GS to the US market.

The GS starts at $1,699 with the limited supply of “early bird” orders.

Already in Europe there have been three successive designs of the foldable e-bike that uses its own hi-tech technologies such an injection-molded magnesium alloy frame and miniature hub motor integrated into quick release wheels.

A Short Weekend Electric Bike Tour of the Finger Lakes [VIDEO]

A few weeks back I ran into my buddy Bryan while commuting home from work. After exchanging some typical DIY E-bike chatter about connector doo-dads and DC-DC converter hacks, Bryan mentioned that he wanted to do some touring of the finger lakes sometime soon.
