Quantifying Bicycles’ Economic Contribution

The U.S. House of Representatives have just passed the Outdoor REC (Recreation’s Economic Contributions) Act, moving it one step closer to being signed into law by the president.

As suggested by its title, The Outdoor REC Act would require the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Labor, working with federal land management agencies, to provide statistics on the economic contribution of recreation to the U.S. economy – and that inlcudes bikes’ and e-bike’s contribution. 

People for Bikes said: 

‘We believe it is time for the bike industry’s economic statistics to be measured in the same way as other sectors such as the automobile, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Measuring the economic benefits of bicycling will demonstrate that investment in bike infrastructure leads to economic development, jobs and healthier communities. Fantic Arrives in the US

Longstanding motorcycle company Fantic is relatively new to the e-bike game, launching a couple of e-fat bikes in fall 2015 onto the European market.

Things move quickly in the e-bike world and now in fall 2016 Fantic has an 11 model collection and has also just entered the US market, setting up office in Sausalito CA.

Gocycle is a well-known name in the US and the UK where it was invented and they have recently taken to Kickstarter with a US goal of raising $250,000 to introduce the GoCycle GS to the US market.

The GS starts at $1,699 with the limited supply of “early bird” orders.

Already in Europe there have been three successive designs of the foldable e-bike that uses its own hi-tech technologies such an injection-molded magnesium alloy frame and miniature hub motor integrated into quick release wheels.

New Electric Bikes from the Birmingham UK Cycle Show

Having been to the trade and press day of the UK’s Birmingham Cycle Show for the past three years it was interesting to see an explosion in the number of electric bikes present.

There were more European firms especially keen to get in on the action of an apparently burgeoning e-bike scene.

Taking centre stage were the e-bike motor manufacturers, namely Bosch and Shimano, each with their own stand, making it clear the resources they were putting into a nascent UK market.

UK’s Exeter rolls out e-bike hire from just 75p (around US$1)

The docking stations are being installed for what looks like it could be a groundbreaking e-bike hire scheme in Exeter in the south-west of the UK.

Local media reports say they are currently being tested and that ‘In the first phase of the scheme, 23 bikes will be available to rent for periods of between 30 minutes and 24 hours, with more due to be added as the scheme grows.’
