New Yuba Spicy Curry Mid Drive Electric Cargo Bike [VIDEO & PICS]
The Yuba Spicy Curry, what a great name for an electric cargo bike.
The name is a play on words because this electric cargo bike has been developed with a partnership between Yuba Bicycles (cargo bike experts) and Currie Technologies (e-bike experts).
Yuba Bicycles is well known for their popular Mundo and Boda Boda cargo bikes that come in their traditional configuration or with electric assist.
The Spicy Curry is their new e-cargo bike that has been designed with the Currie Electro Drive 350 watt mid drive system so that it can haul heavy loads up steep hills.
Mid drive systems have ability to leverage the gears of the bike to climb steep hills in the lower gears and cruise up to 20 mph in the higher gears.
The Spicy Curry also offers a 20″ rear wheel (26″ front) to keep the cargo weight lower for better handling and stability. In addition the rear cargo rack can be adjusted to handle all sorts of loads: a flat rack for boxes or lower the side bars for carrying passengers and there many more possibilities.
The Spicy Curry is priced at $4,500 USD at the time of this article.
I had a chance to checkout the Spicy Curry when Steve Bode from Yuba stopped by the Electric Bike Report office in Sedona, AZ during the Yuba Power Up Tour.
Checkout the following videos and pictures for a closer look at the Spicy Curry.
In the following video Steve Bode from Yuba gives us a closer look:
And in the following video Benjamin Sarrazin (founder of Yuba Bicycles) and Larry Pizzi (President of Currie Technologies) go over the collaborative design of the Spicy Curry.
Now, onto the detailed pictures.
Spicy Curry! You can see how the 20″ rear wheel lowers the cargo rack for better handling of heavy loads.
The frame is aluminum construction. You can see in this pic that they are using the large 1.5″ headtube for extra stability when carrying cargo and/or passengers. Also, there are frame mounts for installing a front rack. The top tube of the frame slopes down to provide for a low step over design.
The frame has a number of reinforcement frame tubes and gussets to make it a sturdy cargo bike with minimal flex.
Yum, Spicy Curry!
This is the rear rack with the “truck bed” configuration for carrying boxes and other large cargo. The side platforms are installed in the upper position to create the flat bed.
Another view of the truck bed configuration.
Here’s an example of the Spicy Curry with an ice cream box mounted on the truck bed configuration.
In this picture you can see that the side platforms have been lowered to the lower position to provide a foot rest for the kiddos.
Here is a closer look at the 350 watt Currie Electro Drive mid drive motor.
And a look at the other side of the Currie Electro Drive motor.
The Currie system provides a 48 V 8.7Ah (417Wh) lithium battery that is mounted low and centered on the bike for good weight distribution.
A Shimano drivetrain for powering up the hills and cruising on the flats.
The Currie Electro Drive display is front and center on the handlebars and it provides a lot of the basic information like: current speed, battery level, pedal assist level (4 levels), trip distance, odometer, etc. The plastic protective cover was still installed in this picture; the display has more clarity when it is removed.
This is the control pad that turns the bike on, adjusts the pedal assist levels, and cycles through other display information.
Tektro Vela hydraulic disc brakes provide a solid feel and do a good job of slowing the Spicy Curry down.

Yuba made a wise choice by specing the balloon style Schwalbe Big Apple Plus tires front and rear. They have a comfortable ride when run at lower air pressure, yet they still provide a relatively efficient ride.
This is the built in rear wheel lock. Checkout the video (above) for more information on how it works.

I didn’t have a lot of time to ride the Spicy Curry so this is not a full review. It does have a solid and comfortable ride feel with the ability to climb almost any hill with the Currie mid drive system.
The versatility of the rear cargo rack is impressive. It’s nice to have the option of both the flat truck bed as well as the lower side bar configuration for carry passengers and other cargo.
Here is more information on the Spicy Curry.

Thanks as always Pete !
All this time being a “lookie-lou” e-biker wanna be is going to come to an end pretty quickly as I sold my acre of dirt in Catalina AZ this past week. Hooray!
Spicy Curry looks appealing I have to look at the rest of your latest report.
My windfall just might afford me a visit to Red Rock Country !
Cheers !
