Comfortable Camping with an Electric Cargo Bike

Last summer gave me the chance to make several ‘comfortable camping’ e-bike trips using an e-bike plus trailer combo.

I’ve just had the chance to try out Riese & Müller’s remarkable Load 60 Touring, a full suspension e-cargo bike, to make a similar trip to the UK’s Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Comfortable Camping by Electric Bike – Part 3 w/ eCamping Tips

I’ve already covered an e-bike camping trip taking plenty of gear to make me comfortable in this post and this post.

For this second trip I took a Haibike Sduro Trekking 4.0 which looked a good choice on paper and a Radical Design Chubby trailer (reviewed here) to enable me to carry more gear than last time (and the Chubby also packed down well, as some train travel was involved).

An e-cargo bike would be a great alternative for heavy duty camping trips like this but as they are not allowed on UK trains one wasn’t suitable for this particular trip. 

I’d planned a three night break for myself and brother with even more creature comforts than last time, including a much bigger tent, the ability to cook basic meals and a solar-powered LED lighting and charging with the HUBi 2K from Solar technology. Electric Bike Camping Part 2 – Ride Report

The Plan

I’ve already outlined the planning stage of my e-bike camping trip in terms of equipment in a previous post.

I planned a two night trip from my home through some of the Southern Pennines most testing off-road tracks.

Electric Bike Camping Part 1: Planning, Gear & Other Tips

Why E-Bike Camping?

Traditional (ie not electrically assisted) cycle camping has something of a tough, outdoors image – you’ll be familiar with images of long distance cycle tourers loaded with large amounts of gear, fit and bronzed from many hours in the saddle, crossing deserts or slowly grinding up mountain passes. 

The modern day fashion for bikepacking certainly looks more lightweight – it’s about strapping the very minimum of camping gear directly onto your bike – but it looks likely you’ll still have to be pretty hardy to enjoy the extremely minimal comforts of this style of cycle camping.

But there is third way and that is e-bike camping of course!

An e-bike lets you carry more gear for more comfort and convenience and put in less of the extreme physical effort associated with traditional fully-loaded cycle camping.
