The Basics Of Electric Bike Insurance

With many now grabbing bike helmets instead of car keys for their daily commute, investing in insurance for your e-bike might make a lot of sense for your personal situation.

And a basic policy can be surprisingly cheap –  e-bike policies start at around $100 per year and offer a variety of coverage levels and deductible options. You might imagine with the extra power and weight onboard that comes with an e-bike means they would cost more than traditional non-powered e-bikes to insure but this isn’t necessarily the case.

For example, UK based specialist bike insurers Bikmo announced in July 2020 that they would cut premiums for e-bike riders, with new research showing that e-bikers were 38% less likely to make a claim compared to non-assisted riders. Indeed, Bikmo says customers can now insure an e-bike worth £2,000 from £9 a month, which they say is typically 25% less than a standard road bike of the same value.

Also insurance brings with it other benefits if you opt for more of a ‘bells and whistles’ type policy covering areas such as third party liability and accidental damage.

E-Bike Insurance 101: Make Sure the E-bike is Secure

It’s stating the obvious; of course you don’t want your bike to be stolen so of course the first line of defence is a good lock and good home security. If you live in a property with no secure outside storage folding and compact e-bikes can be the difference between owning an e-bike and not. If you have a larger e-bike kept in a garage or an outbuilding of some kind security is much more important.

A ground anchor is a particularly good idea for outbuilding security as a good last line of defence; I’ve used examples from Hiplok and Squire.

Ebike News: US E-bikes Outstrip E-cars, Launches from Santa Cruz and Honbike and Lots More!

The UN Climate Conference Change (COP26) held in Glasgow, Scotland at the end of 2021 focused almost entirely on electric cars as the transport part of the equation in figuring out how to head off climate change. However, news reported by Bloomberg recently suggests there is another (and easier and better) solution.

Yes, you guessed it, e-bikes. Hundreds of thousands of Americans also put two and two together over the course of 2021 and bought e-bikes in record breaking numbers (or least it’s a fair assumption that’s what they did if e-bike import figures are anything to go by). Indeed e-bike imports in 2021 outpaced electric car sales (that’s electric cars of any kind, hybrid variants and pure battery) – and by some margin. Clearly all these purchasers get it – e-bikes are good not only for the planet but good for your pocket and good for your health. A win, win, win situation.

In this week’s e-bike news:

  • E-bikes accelerating away from electric cars in the US
  • Santa Cruz Heckler emtb gets bigger battery for 2022
  • Japan’s shaft-driven Honbike gets ready to roll out across the globe
  • New city e-bike race series looks to launch in Dubai in late 2022
  • Pedego highlights how e-bikes help those recovering from serious health problems
  • A new warning noise standard for e-scooters?

Simon Cowell suffers head injury, broken arm after e-bike crash

Simon Cowell's E-bike Accident

World renowned music mogul, television host and apparent electric bike aficionado Simon Cowell is recovering after a e-bike crash outside his West London home.

Cowell reportedly suffered a broken arm and a harrowingly bloody head injury from this most recent incident, which took place last Thursday. Several news outlets have reported the 62-year-old “America’s Got Talent” judge was not wearing a helmet.

A source told British tabloid The Sun that Cowell was “lucky to be alive” after this most recent crash. That source also told the publication the incident happened after Cowell hit a wet patch going about 20 mph and the bike’s wheels came out from under him, propelling him over the handlebars. Passerbys stopped to help Cowell, who reportedly had blood pouring from his head.

It’s the second time in two years that Cowell has hit the deck on an electric-powered bike, but the first time he’s publicly crashed an apparently street-legal e-bike. In August 2020, he suffered a broken back after crashing an ultra-powerful Swind EB-01, which with a 15kW motor and speeds up to 60 mph, lies somewhere in the un-regulated grey area between electric motorcycle and e-bike.

Cowell’s first crash was reported as an ‘e-bike crash,’ but it wasn’t

In August 2020, Cowell broke his back in a crash while test riding a Swind EB-01 at his home in Malibu, an uber-powerful machine that is far closer to an electric motorcycle than an e-bike. That incident resulted in Cowell undergoing a six hour surgery to insert a metal rod into his spine. It also sparked heated debate over the differences between electric bicycles and electric motorcycles, with Cowell’s team briefly weighing legal action against Swind, according to the Daily Mail.

This time, the bike Cowell crashed appears to be a bonafide e-bike. Reports say Cowell was riding a Das Spitzing Evolution S-Pedelec, a full suspension eMTB with a 500W mid-drive motor and 1050Wh battery.

With a top pedal assisted speed of 27 mph, the Das Spitzing is street legal in the UK, where this crash happened, but only if it’s taxed, insured and if the rider is licensed to ride them, In the U.S., the Das Spitzing is street legal in most states without any restrictions.

Though this time on an apparently street-legal e-bike, Cowell’s crash is a reminder of the importance of wearing a helmet and careful e-bike use. There’s little that’s exceptional about riding an e-bike at 20 mph on wet roads — it’s a legal speed achievable by most e-bikes sold in the U.S. and likely something many e-bike riders and traditional cyclists do on a regular basis — but it doesn’t take an exceptional situation for a rider to go down.

While Cowell’s August 2020 crash resulted in a hospital stay and extensive recovery, this time the star was seen leaving the hospital the same day with his arm wrapped in a bright yellow cast. His spokesperson told The Sun this latest crash hasn’t scared him off e-bikes, “but he will start wearing a helmet.”
