E-bikes are bounding ahead in many parts of the world.
In the Netherlands 2018 saw a truly significant benchmark when more new e-bikes were bought than regular non-assisted bikes.
E-bikes are also a large part of German bike sales with many other European countries increasing e-bike sales rapidly.
In the leading European countries we are beginning to see industry bodies and the public regard e-bikes as ‘the new normal’ when talking about bikes in general.
China has taken a different route to popularising e-bikes but they are still massively popular.

We were midway into an electric bike tour at Idaho’s Schweitzer Mountain, which is among a growing number of ski resorts nationwide that are offering electric bike rides and rentals to boost their summertime offerings, when our guide stops to show us a tree with long claw marks and pealing bark.
It’s a bear scratching tree, a spot where local black bears mark their territory and rub their backs and claws.

Eurobike later this summer is the biggest bike trade show in Europe but it can be difficult to cover everything going on because it’s so enormous.
So there are now a number of ‘pre-show shows’ specialising in particular areas to help get the message out of all that’s new and I have just attended the Frankfurt Eurobike Media Days.
This show focused on urban biking with the vast majority of the companies exhibiting being e-bike manufacturers.

Last summer gave me the chance to make several ‘comfortable camping’ e-bike trips using an e-bike plus trailer combo.
I’ve just had the chance to try out Riese & Müller’s remarkable Load 60 Touring, a full suspension e-cargo bike, to make a similar trip to the UK’s Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Could Electric Bikes Help Tackle Cities’ Pollution Problems?
Following the 2018 National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC) National Electric Bike Owner Survey, lead author John MacArthur wanted to see if this was the case.
Published in May this year the white paper, MacArthur showed that e-bikes could remove 900 metric tonnes of greenhouse gases from Portland OR’s atmosphere every day.
In his previous research, MacArthur had seen that a significant number of e-bike trips would have previously been done by car thanks to a range of factors including age and mobility issues of those riding them, and the fact that riding an e-bike people will often travel double the distance they would a traditional bike.
