E-Bike News: Utility Series from Vvolt plus Canyon, Yamaha and Cube New Releases!

Not that long ago electric cargo bikes were seen as something of a niche, but this week’s news confirms they are much centre stage in the current e-bike world – both in the US and Europe. Based in one the US’s leading cycle cities, Portland, Oregon, Vvolt have chosen to launch a range of small-wheeled e-bikes that can carry pretty large loads – as their mission statement webpage says, they are ‘all about making daily transportation better for everyone.’

Meanwhile, over in Europe, Cube once had a reputation for making pretty conventional but high quality and good value e-bikes and have chosen to approach the cargo e-bike market from a much more niche angle with an e-trike. Trikes and e-trikes are rare machines indeed but if anyone can make their appeal more mainstream it is Cube. Both approaches are very welcome as load carrying is still a much-under appreciated forte of e-bikes.

Just how light can e-bikes get? There have been a number of ultra-light electric road bikes in recent years but it’s good to see Swiss firm Thömus and the UK’s Cytronex pushing the boundaries of weight in the hybrid and folding areas. Other areas we explore are how far auto firms will get into e-bikes (with Rivian the latest manufacturer to signal a possible move in that direction), state subsidies, e-bike camping conversions and speed pedelec recumbents in Europe. A truly mixed bag.

Electric Bike Company Model S Review: Overview

The Electric Bike Company Model S is a well made Class 3 electric beach cruiser powered by a 500W motor. With casual cruiser-oriented geometry and loads of customization, there are a lot of great features that make the Model S one of our favorite beach cruisers.

When we started the Electric Bike Company Model S review, we were impressed with how sturdy the frame was and how clean its welds are. It also came fully assembled, which was a nice touch. It didn’t take long for us to tell that EBC put a lot of effort into their electric cruiser.

Electric Bike Company has one of the most complete online customization tools we’ve seen in the e-bike industry, and our review model of the Model S was decked out with a custom colorway (even on the battery pack!), wood fenders, an upgraded 48V, 18Ah battery and a single speed drivetrain, plus a couple of additional custom features and accessories.

Note: The main difference between the Model S and the Model Y is the location of the battery. The Model S has the battery located above the rear tire, while the Model Y’s battery is stored in the basket up front. The Model R and Model E store the battery in the downtube.

If you’re looking for a comfortable cruiser oriented e-bike that will withstand the tests of time, then we would highly recommend looking into the Model S. During our review its performance and extensive features backed up its looks.

The Rad Power Bikes RadRover 6 Plus is a Class 2 fat tire electric bike that’s designed for paved and unpaved joyrides and commutes. The RadRover 6 has enough power to thrive in a town with steep hills and enough comfort to enjoy your evening cruise.

The RadRover 6 Plus holds onto its classic Rover roots while still bringing some new bells and whistles to the table. When we started the RadRover 6 Plus review process we noticed some big changes right out of the box. From the new dual display to the integrated battery pack, the evolution of the RadRover was apparent. Rad claims their RadRover 6 Plus to be “the biggest evolution in RadRover history”.

Looks aren’t everything though, so we conducted a hill climb test, brake test, circuit test and more to get familiar with the changes Rad’s made since the last time we reviewed a Rad Power Bikes model. By the end of this review you should have a good idea of how the bike performed and if the RadRover 6 is the right fat tire e-bike for you.

The Blix Sol Eclipse is a Class 2 electric beach cruiser that comes with a 48V, 12.8 Ah battery and 750W rear hub motor. With a comfortable and upright riding position and plenty of power, the Sol Eclipse excels at keeping the rider satisfied by keeping things easy.

Throughout the Blix Sol Eclipse review process I found myself liking the bike more and more with time. It’s a great bike to cruise around paved trails and boardwalks on. Blix has designed the Sol Eclipse in a way that makes it great for just about anybody who wants to go on a stress free casual cruise.

The budget-friendly price point mixed with the bike’s smooth sailing riding experience makes it a hard one to ignore. We conducted numerous tests and put in over 100 miles on the Sol Eclipse so that you can get a better understanding of if it’s the right bike for you.

Summary Review: Ride1UP Core-5

I’m a sucker for sleek, stealthy bikes. I’ve always appreciated the subtle details that can add up into one bike. Ride1UP’s Core-5 is just that, as everything from the sharp angles on the top tube to the low profile battery integration on the downtube screams sophistication. I couldn’t wait to see if the performance matched its looks.

The Ride1UP Core-5 review was an instance of not knowing what to expect when it comes to performance. While it may look nice, it’s what’s on the inside that counts and I was ready to put the Core-5 through the ringer to see how high performance of an e-bike it truly was.

Right away I discovered that the Core-5 is ready to get low in corners and blast up hills. With a respectable weight of just 49 lbs it rides more naturally than some of its heavier competitors. The Core-5 rolls smooth and rides fast thanks to the powerful 500W motor and fast rolling tires; it feels like a true Class 3 e-bike. If you can appreciate a good looking frame design and enjoy getting out for a pedal, check out the Ride1UP Core-5.

When we reviewed the KBO Hurricane electric commuter bike, one of our main takeaways is that it’s a standard bike first and an electric bike second. The Hurricane does a good job of not overwhelming the rider with loads of wattage and power.

Instead, it seems to give the rider assistance in the background which makes for a very organic feeling e-bike. With a sleek design and low weight, the KBO Hurricane is a great commuter for those who don’t want to spend lots of money on an e-bike.

We found the Hurricane is also good for those who still want to get a good workout on their ride. With only 250W of sustained power, the Hurricane is never going to take over for the rider which we found to be a refreshing experience.

Propella V4.0 Review: Overview

Over the course of reviewing the Propella V4.0 we noticed it emphasizes the “bike” in e-bike. First and foremost, it feels like a traditional bicycle while you’re riding it, but with an added boost on hills and during acceleration. I’d relate the riding experience to feeling physically at 100 percent, while riding with a tailwind. The assistance never takes over the ride experience as a whole, instead it does a great job of completing it.

If you simply love to ride bicycles, you don’t like the idea of an over-powered e-bike and you don’t want to spend too much money, I see the Propella V4.0 as a great option for you.The 250W motor provides consistent and smooth engagement, and the 630mm bar will keep you confident at speed. This is a great e-bike for those who are curious about e-bikes but don’t want to commit to a $2000-plus model.

Plus, because of the V4.0s predecessors you’ll receive a refined version based on years of feedback and testing; the V4.0 has puncture resistant tires, a 4th generation battery, and a more compact charger than the previous model.

Dirwin Seeker Review: Overview

The Dirwin Seeker is a Class 3 electric fat bike that combines a powerful motor with a long battery life, intuitive display and comfortable ride geometry. When we reviewed the Dirwin Seeker we quickly learned how well rounded it is compared to some other e-bikes we’ve reviewed. From hill climbs, to off-road to general handling the Seeker impressed us with its wide array of strong suits.

The Seeker’s 750W motor produces up to 80Nm of torque. This makes for a very capable all-terrain bike that doesn’t have any issue plowing through sandy pits or up gravel roads. While plenty of fat tire e-bikes claim to have all terrain capability, very few prove it like the Seeker.

If you’re looking for a fairly priced Class 3 e-bike that won’t be confined to one terrain or style of riding, the Seeker may be the bike for you. With 4-inch wide tires, front suspension and plenty of power it’s ready for any adventure any time.


***The Dirwin’s throttle and pedal assistance max speed are tied and must be adjusted together, so unless you disconnect the throttle it can only legally be a Class 2 e-bike. Keep your area’s e-bike laws and regulations in mind.***
