This is part one of a multi-part story: Why an electric cargo bike, and how do you build one of these?

Earlier in my life, I was a bicycle racer. From about the age of 10 until 30, most waking moments were spent trying to figure out how to go faster on a bicycle. That ended nearly 15 years ago. At that time, cargo bikes weren’t seen on the roads, let alone electric assist cargo bikes. So why now, in my mid 40’s, was I interested in such a machine?

Trip Report: The Electric Bike Scene in Bend, Oregon. [VIDEOS]

I recently took a trip to Bend, Oregon and I had a chance to visit a couple of e-bike shops and check out some other e-bike & bike culture.

Bend is a mountain town in Central Oregon and has a population of around 80,000.

During the summer it’s usually nice and dry with long sunny days.  Bend is a very outdoor focused town with lots of opportunities for walking, biking, hiking, boating/rafting, fishing, rock climbing, skiing, etc.

E-Bike Gear: Showers Pass Portland Jacket Review [VIDEO]

In the dimly lit streets of Vancouver, BC, I could see the jacket of the rider ahead of me light up every time a car passed from behind. I admired the looks of the jacket as we had ridden from restaurant to pub to pub.

As we neared the end of the six hour urban bike tour of Vancouver – which is a great way to see that city – I rode up next to the rider and asked “What kind of jacket is that?”. E-Bike News: BMW E-Bike, Stromer ST1, E-Bikes at SXSW, BikeSpike, & More!

BMW is another car manufacturer that has jumped into the electric bike scene!  Here is the BMW Cruise electric bike that is powered by the 250 watt Bosch electric bike kit. The bikes will initially be released in the German market and maybe if things go well it will expand beyond that.

Stromer is launching their ST1 Elite ($3,499) and ST1 Platinum ($3,999) electric bikes in the US market this year.
