The 5th annual People for Bikes E-Bike Summit was a big success with the largest attendance yet.
2019 was a busy year for many aspects of electric bikes so there was a lot to cover in this 1 day event.

Could Electric Bikes Help Tackle Cities’ Pollution Problems?
Following the 2018 National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC) National Electric Bike Owner Survey, lead author John MacArthur wanted to see if this was the case.
Published in May this year the white paper, MacArthur showed that e-bikes could remove 900 metric tonnes of greenhouse gases from Portland OR’s atmosphere every day.
In his previous research, MacArthur had seen that a significant number of e-bike trips would have previously been done by car thanks to a range of factors including age and mobility issues of those riding them, and the fact that riding an e-bike people will often travel double the distance they would a traditional bike. For all the publicity about their advantages, e-bikes are very much in the hands of early adopters in the US today.
Michael McQueen and John MacArthur of the Transportation Research and Education Center at Portland State University saw that e-bike buying incentive programs have the ability to get people to buy and use them.

A report for the Portland, OR based National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC) shows that e-bike users are increasingly replacing car use with e-bikes.
The research published last month found, “The majority of the utilitarian trips (i.e., errands and commutes) being made by e-bike are replacing motor vehicle trips, which signifies an impressive decrease in vehicle miles traveled.”
The research involved a survey of 1,759 e-bike users and owners across the United States, and it also found that people who might not use traditional bikes due to age and physical disability are using e-bikes, and that there is a perception of increased safety on e-bikes. The city of Portland Oregon is all about bikes and it was fitting to have the Electric Bike Expo in this city that continues to push the envelope of bike infrastructure and bike culture in the U.S.
The highlights of the #PDX Expo were a policy makers ride hosted by the mayor of Milwalkie, a lot of local media coverage, a lucky Tempo eBike winner, Bixby the wild eBike traveling dog and her human, and many eBike smiles on and off the test track!

The results are in from a recent electric bike survey: 55% of those surveyed had ridden a traditional bike weekly or daily. That jumped to 93% after they bought an e-bike!
6% of those surveyed had not ridden a bike as an adult. With an electric bike, 89% of those now ride daily or weekly!
