Electric Bike Tariffs – Dazed and Confused

Electric bike manufacturers and sellers in the United States have been left dazed and confused by the imposition of tariffs on e-bike components and whole bikes by the Trump Administration in his latest round attacks in the trade war against China. 

According to the trade body People for Bikes, “On Tuesday August 7, the [US Trade Representative] USTR announced that the round of tariffs that includes e-bikes and e-bike motors has been approved. This means that tariffs on electric bicycles imported under Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) headings 8711.60.00 or 8711.90.01 will increase from zero to 25 percent. Derby Electric Bike Share Program a Surprising Success

The UK northern industrial city of Derby has recently seen the launch of the U.K.’s biggest electric bike sharing scheme.

Comprising of some 200 electric bikes, the program is wholly owned by Derby City Council and run by the bike sharing company Hourbike using e-bikes made by US company Social Bike. 

The scheme was soft launched in July, with 50 electric bikes stationed at various industrial, academic and publicly accessible docking stations across the city.

According to a statement from Derby City Council, “Docking stations will be based across the city at various University of Derby sites, Rolls-Royce, the Railway Station, Derby Arena, the Council House, the Market Place, Victoria Street, The Spot, Castle Ward, the Roundhouse, Royal Derby Hospital and the Rail Technology Centre.” [Read more…] about Derby Electric Bike Share Program a Surprising Success

The SunPedal Ride at Intersolar San Francisco 2018 [VIDEO]

The SunPedal Ride is a project to raise awareness towards increasing the use of electric mobility and solar energy – a sustainability initiative.

This project was started by Sushil Reddy, who held a Guinness World Record for the longest journey on an electric bike in India in 2016.

The idea of this project was born with the motivation to raise awareness among the people in India about clean energy and transportation ensuring sustainability.

Electric Bike Grant Gets Great Response From Swedish Public

Cities and countries around the world are facing a dual problem: their transport infrastructure is becoming congested and that is causing pollution that in turn poisons the population and is adding to humanity’s contribution to climate change.

One solution has been to encourage businesses and the general public to use electric cars, vans and trucks.

Overall the take-up has been encouraging with growing numbers going electric both in logistics and among private individuals.

Though this is helping clean up cities’ air and may well be reducing global carbon emissions to some extent, electric car, truck and van subsidies are not reducing congestion that is one of the major factors behind cities’ bad air.

Could eBiking Help with Type 2 Diabetes?

New research from Bristol University in England suggests that riding e-bikes might help treat type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes, where the body has difficulties digesting sugar, is a condition associated with affluence and is one of the biggest public health issues in the Western world.

It is estimated that more than 3 million Americans are diagnosed with it every year. The most common factors leading to it are lack of activity and a high calorie food intake.

How UPS Sees Electric Cargo Bikes Fitting Into Global Logistics [VIDEO]

E-bikes and e-cargo-bikes are having an impact on people as they wake up to their range, agility and ease of use.

Big logistics businesses have seen their potential too, with increasing numbers of logistics and delivery companies looking at using them to increase efficiency and tackle their carbon emissions.

United Parcel Service (UPS) is one of the biggest logistics operators in the world and claims to move ‘2% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product every day’.

Research Finds eBiking Replaces Car Trips

A report for the Portland, OR based National Institute for Transportation and Communities (NITC) shows that e-bike users are increasingly replacing car use with e-bikes. 

The research published last month found, “The majority of the utilitarian trips (i.e., errands and commutes) being made by e-bike are replacing motor vehicle trips, which signifies an impressive decrease in vehicle miles traveled.”

The research involved a survey of 1,759 e-bike users and owners across the United States, and it also found that people who might not use traditional bikes due to age and physical disability are using e-bikes, and that there is a perception of increased safety on e-bikes.  [Read more…] about Research Finds eBiking Replaces Car Trips

Police Departments Using Electric Bikes as the Best Tool for the Job

E-bikes in law enforcement?

Police departments around the USA are starting to see the benefits of e-bikes. 

There have been a number of incidents when police officers on e-bikes have secured arrests where police cars haven’t been able to get to the situation as quickly. 

Police Officer Benjamin Tseng of Federal Way Police Department (near Seattle WA) recounted, “in the very first week we were trialing e-bikes we arrested a wanted felon who had gotten away from officers a couple of weeks prior. When he was spotted, a patrol car pulled up and the subject quickly walked away, trying to blend into a busy parking lot. The patrol car was stuck in traffic but an officer with the ebike was able to zip through traffic and catch up to the subject and arrest him. A Ride A Day Keeps The Doctor At Bay

Could a ride a day keep the doctor at bay?

New research from the University of Birmingham in England suggests that intense exercise can slow down most of the problems associated with aging.

It is never too late to get on your e-bike, as starting at any time in life can help to reverse some of the problems associated with old age.

Lead researcher Professor Janet Lord, Director of the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing Director of the MRC-Arthritis Research UK Centre for Musculoskeletal Ageing Research, published the research in the journal, Aging Cell this month.
