Juiced Scorpion – Bicycle, Moped or eBike?

The Juiced Scorpion has plenty of motorbike features though the basic model is a class 3 e-bike in the US, legally speaking

The Juiced Scorpion was launched at the end of last year and though it looks like a moped-cum-motorcycle it is, legally speaking, a US class 2 and 3 e-bike with throttle assist to 20mph and pedelec style assist to 28mph. It is even marketed under the slogan  Where Moped Meets eBike.

eBike Industry Interviews: Bimotal Elevate With CEO Toby Ricco

We are always excited about new innovations in the ebike market and the new Elevate from Bimotal is a premium removable powertrain that is lightweight and powerful. We have been keeping an eye on this product and recently we were able to have a conversation with Toby Ricco, CEO and founder of Bimotal. Toby provides an overview of the Elevate system – and explains how this removable motor can add 50-100Nm of torque to the back wheel of your regular mountain bike. Elevate solves the issue of multiple bikes because you can use your existing bike with the option to add power when needed. The mount weighs less than 200 grams, the drive unit is two pounds and the whole system is under six pounds. A battery pack fits in your bottle cage with a throttle attached to the front handlebar to control the system. We found Elevate to be an intriguing solution to several problems and were excited to discuss this system with Toby.

Thanks for joining us here on Electric Bike Report, Toby! We’re excited to discuss Bimotal and Elevate with you today. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your company? How did you get started? What spawned the idea for the Elevate system?

Thanks! I’m happy to be here. Yeah, so I’ve always been an avid mountain biker, but a skiing accident left me with a knee injury that made it so I could no longer power up the hills like I once did. I considered buying an ebike, but at the time I had a custom Cannondale Lefty that was fully spec’d, only weighed 25lb, and had 160mm of travel. Most ebikes are close to 50lb and didn’t have the same level of specs so I just didn’t feel I’d be able to get the same experience. Plus, I had customized my bike quite a bit and I wanted to keep riding it! So I started to analyze retrofit systems and how I could design something that would allow me to use my current bike, but which added torque when I needed it. I focused on the drivetrain and then zeroed in on the rear rotor as a means for adding power to the rear wheel.

The team at Electric Bike Report has been looking forward to reviewing the Electric Bike Company Model Y — a slightly more feminine rendition of the ever-popular Model X — that features a dropped top tube for an easy 17.25” step over height. While this classic cruiser works well for anyone, the standard front basket, chic styling and relaxed feel caters specifically to female riders looking for something powerful, fun, and customizable.

We’ve always been impressed with the Electric Bike Company models we’ve reviewed thanks to the abundant color combinations, accessories and upgrades they offer. And that’s featured here yet again on the Model Y. You can opt for the stock glossy white frame which looks striking in any setting, or upgrade to any color of your choice (if Pantone has it, they’ll match it). You can even get brown Schwalbe Fat Frank tires with white walls and a pop of rim color! How about wood fenders and/or chainguard? EBC offers those as well. The front basket is standard and a rear rack is optional, both of which can be paint matched per your aesthetic.

The powerful 1000w peak motor is tucked in the rear hub while the battery sits stealthily at the bottom of the front basket. This placement keeps the battery out of the way when you are getting on and off the bike and reduces rear weight as well. We were able to ride this bike 35+ miles on full assist and over 90 miles on level 1 pedal assist! The thumb throttle makes it easy to quickly get going and the torque sensor keeps the ride smooth and controllable.

Bianchi e-Omnia – One Name, three Families and Some Eyecatching Prices

Once known primarily as an Italian brand with a long road racing heritage in recent years Bianchi has moved rapidly into e-bikes. They have now announced e-Omnia, the generic name for their three new lines of e-bike:

 

The e-Omnia C-type has a step-thru frame for city use

The C-Type is Bianchi’s take on the electric city bike with prices starting at €3320. There is a choice of 500 or 625Wh batteries. Choose from Shimano’s 1×10 Deore derailleur or their 5-speed hub gears and a host of carrying options.

New PWR Bike Dual Traction Model

PWR Bike’s Dually features dual 500W motors

New brand PWR Bike has just announced the Dually. PWR say their first e-bike is ‘unique’ as it uses dual 500W hub drive motors for ‘All-Wheel Drive performance with the benefits of Traction Control. The drive system automatically diverts power to the tire with more grip to greatly increase traction and control on loose and steep terrain. It also has a grip throttle so riders can give themselves a boost when needed.’

It has a 696Wh battery and weighs 66 lbs / 30kg with a load capacity (including rider) of 275 lbs / 125kg.

Lectric XP Review: Summary

There are plenty of different bikes, and brands in the ebike space, but not all of them have been as successful as Lectric has with their first bike, the XP. The $900 price point, mixed with a top speed of 28 mph definitely caught our eye, and the team at Electric Bike Report was super excited to try out the XP.

Throughout our testing we realized what a cool bike the XP truly is, and we believe that Lectric did a phenomenal job with their first bike. The Lectric XP exceeded our expectations and we believe this bike could be life changing for some consumers.

The Lectric XP e-bike is a budget-friendly folding bike currently priced at less than a thousand dollars. This ebike is equipped with burly 4” wide tires, a twist throttle, and an adjustable top speed of 28mph. You can get the Lectric XP in white, or glossy black which includes matching fenders, a rear rack and padded saddle. This is Lectrics standard version of the XP, it’s also available the Lectric XP Step-Thru version for the same price.

The XP also has integrated front and rear lights for safety and visibility, and a handlebar mounted LCD display that shows battery level, current speed, pedal assist level, and trip distance. On top of that, the 500W hub motor and LG battery are extremely strong and offer a solid range of 25-45 miles. The XP also folds in half, and the handlebars fold down so you can throw it in a car trunk or on a bus. Our team was thoroughly impressed with the XP, the features you get for the price you pay is hard to beat.

Summary Review: ARCC Moulton TSR Electric

ARCC have been making the ARCC e2-pod Intelligent Power system for a number of years now. We have tried several versions of this lightweight and high-tech system before and liked it very much – but this time it is fitted to an absolute classic of bike design, the Moulton, which is also designed and manufactured in the UK. Both have a reputation for being lightweight and very well-made so we were keen to see how the two outstanding designs would work together.  

There aren’t that many lightweight drive systems around so the ARCC e2-pod Intelligent Power system, adding around 4kg (including battery) to whatever design of bike it is installed on, is great to have as an option if lightweight is high up on your list of e-bike boxes to tick . Nor are there many road / touring bikes that feature suspension as the Moulton does. Put these two together and you have an e-bike that does what very few others can do. 

Our bottom line ARCC Moulton TSR Electric review: ARCC have managed to blend superb quality with great practicality and long term sustainability with the Moulton TSR Electric.

UK Bike Shops Deemed Essential Again As Country Enters Second Lockdown

On Wednesday 6th of January most of the UK entered a second lockdown, with only listed shops and services allowed to say open. Cycling Industy News reports that ‘Listed among the transport services permitted to stay open bike shops will again be allowed to operate in full, offering sales and workshop services, though it is advisable to have a policy in place limiting the number of customers in store at once.’

Super Magnum – Olympia’s E-trekking Bike

Major Italian bike and e-bike brand Olympia have just announced the new Super Magnum e-trekking model. If features the new torque sensor-equipped Ananda M81 mid-drive. Olympia say ‘This motor, supported by a 630 Wh battery, stands out for its compact size and very low noise….The engine is capable of developing 100 Nm of torque.’

Other features include hydraulic disc brakes, Shimano Alivio 9-speed transmission, adjustable handlebar stem, wide profile Schwalbe Super Moto tires, front suspension fork and suspension seat post.

The bike retails at 2569 euros.

Olympia appeared in many e-bike news sites in spring 2020 when it launched a series of e-bikes with huge 900Wh in frame batteries.
