Retrospec Beaumont Rev 2 Review

Classic good looks, super-comfy cruising, and packed with value.

In a time where everything seems expensive, we can’t state enough how refreshing it is to see a brand introduce a bike that checks most boxes for most riders, and does it all for an MSRP of $999. So, when the crew over at Retrospec sent us their new Beaumont Rev 2, we were pumped to hit the road and see what it could do. In this Retrospec Beaumont Rev 2 review, we’re going to answer the age-old question about “budget” e-bikes: Can you have your cake and eat it too, even with today’s rising e-bike price tags?

Spoiler alert, we think you can.

Right off the bat, this bike is comfortable! We spend a lot of time on bikes here at Electric Bike Report, and comfort (or lack thereof) becomes quickly apparent to us once we hit the paths. In my testing this week, I spent quite a bit of time on the Beaumont Rev 2, and from my first mile, this bike kept me cruising with comfort. Retrospec’s choice for Compass 27.5”x2.4” city tires and cushioned wide leather seat were spot on, as they teamed up to deliver a smooth ride that I found myself not wanting to get off of.

But, what good is comfort (and price) if the bike doesn’t look good? I mean, that’s half the battle these days, a bike just needs to look good. Well, the folks at Retrospec really went big by offering six colors to pick from with the Beaumont Rev 2. So, no matter what your style is, you can likely find a color from the lineup that compliments your taste.

Now, with all my flattery out of the way, it’s time to get into the testing data we got with the Beaumont Rev 2. So, is it all pretty paint and price tags? Or, does this bike really deliver in the areas you need it most, things like range, speed, braking and ride quality? Well, let’s get nerdy and find out.

BikTrix Has $1 Million in Inventory Stolen; Watch for Deals

Canadian e-bike maker had an entire container of their new e-bike stolen.

Anyone who has ever had a bike or e-bike stolen knows the sense of pain, anger and betrayal you feel upon discovery. Now, imagine having that magnified more than 100 times. Canadian e-bike brand BikTrix was set to begin shipping their newest model, the Juggernaut FS ST, a powerful full-suspension all-terrain e-bike with a step-thru frame. A full shipping container of the Juggernaut FS ST had been delivered to BikTrix’s Delta, BC, warehouse.

The container of e-bikes, which included some prototypes as well as 140 of the new Juggernaut FS ST, had just recently arrived at their warehouse, but hadn’t been unloaded yet. Unfortunately for BikTrix, thieves with a Ryder cab broke the lock that secured the container chassis on which the shipping container sat and simply connected the chassis to the truck and drove off with it.

BikTrix provided Canadian police with surveillance video from the warehouse as well as the truck’s license plate number. Canadian police tracked the truck for two days but when they observed no illegal activity, ceased their surveillance.

“This container wasn’t just metal and contents, this container was like a treasure chest of our dreams, our entire team’s hard work, and considerable market value worth $1M—comprising all of our savings,” said Biktrix Founder and CEO Roshan Thomas

Had the container not yet reached the BikTrix warehouse in Delta, BC, it would have been covered by a ship-to-shore policy that protects shipments while in transit. Unfortunately, because though the container had been delivered it was no longer covered by that policy, which leaves BikTrix to hope that it can be claimed under the umbrella policy the business carries.

The e-bikes in question are BikTrix’s new Juggernaut FS ST. This is a full-suspension e-bike with a rear suspension that is largely hidden from view and a Truckrun mid-drive motor that produces 1200W. It comes in a fat-tire version as well as an eMTB version. Are Location-Based E-Bike Power Cuts A Good Thing?

The Netherlands is experimenting with technology that would allow the government to reduce speed in certain areas.

Amsterdam city officials are experimenting with a new technology that would allow them to reduce the speed of e-bikes in specific locations. The technology is GPS-based and has been developed by a nonprofit, the Townmaking Institute, in conjunction with Odido—formerly T-Mobile Netherlands—for connectivity.

The concept is a simple one: In highly congested areas, city officials would like to be able to reduce the maximum speed of e-bikes in order to increase safety. The technology would not cause an e-bike to brake. Rather, it would reduce the motor’s power output, effectively stepping down the pedal-assist level.

Such a concept may seem hard to fathom in our freedom-obsessed nation. Dutch officials see it as a matter of general safety for all users. Bike and e-bike use in the Netherlands is so high that parking all of them can be a challenge.

The system will allow two different forms of communication, which the Dutch officials call “nudges” and “nannies.” The nudges would be alerts sent out to riders alerting them to conditions to be aware, such as accidents. The nannies would be speed reductions based on a rider’s GPS coordinates.

As it is, e-bikes in the Netherlands are limited to a maximum speed assistance level of 25kph (18 mph). The technology would allow the system to reduce a rider’s speed to 15kph.

“We have a bike that can really be slowed down,” said Melanie van der Horst, Amsterdam’s Deputy Mayor who heads up the city’s traffic and transport policymaking. “I’m curious to see people using this technology. Later this year, we are actually going to do a test on a cycle route in the city. I hope the busy bike paths in our city will be safer with intelligent speed adjustment.”

Van der Horst tried a prototype and said, “I saw a child playing football on my screen. A little later, it switched to red, and my speed dropped to 15 kilometers per hour.”

The Dutch officials liken the technology to a seatbelt—a safety measure that can improve the safety of everyone nearby.

Amsterdam’s van der Horst acknowledges that there will be critics to what some will call a “nanny state” infringement upon freedom. To critics she says, “This plan does something to cyclists’ sense of freedom. On the other hand, their current freedom also affects the freedom of others, and their speeding limits this.”

Dutch officials acknowledged the existence of five different mid-drive motors found on e-bikes. For the system to work as intended, it would need to be able to communicate with all of those systems and unless each rider’s e-bike was linked to their smartphone in order to receive notifications and controlling inputs, their system wouldn’t be able to do much. Also, they seem to be underestimating the number of motors on the market, so they have hurdles to cross that aren’t only technical.

And while we see the need for public safety, we wonder how this will go over in the famously libertine Dutch society.

Washington D.C. E-Bike Voucher Program To Launch April 1st

Washington D.C. went with a discount voucher rather than a rebate program.

Washington, D.C., residents won’t be fooled on April 1st. That’s the day that the city’s new e-bike voucher program goes into effect. Those wanting to take part will need to act quickly, though, as it runs for barely more than two weeks, from April 1 to April 15.

The program is aimed at low-income households and initially, applications will only be accepted from those currently enrolled in SNAP, Medicaid or the D.C. Healthcare Alliance.

Those approved for vouchers will be able to receive up to $2000 off a cargo e-bike, $1500 off a regular e-bike, up to $250 off maintenance or disability accessories or up to $150 off a bike lock. Buyers will present the voucher to the retailer who will then discount the sticker price.

People wishing to apply can do so online or fill out an application at one of the pop-up events officials will be holding around the city.

The city plans to give out 250 vouchers in the first round, which can be used with any of a group of 12 D.C.-based retailers. Direct-to-consumer online purchases will not be eligible. The list of retailers can be found here.

In time the program will be open to “standard” applicants, which would be anyone not receiving a form of public assistance. Officials have funded the program to the tune of $500,000 and they believe that demand will exceed the number of vouchers they can provide.

Voucher programs seem to be increasing in popularity, in part, due to the ease of administration. They reduce administration over what is required to run a rebate program.

We’re glad to see a voucher program that includes provisions to make sure that the vouchers go to low-income households. Studies on EVs have shown that high-income households will take any sort of discount they get, but the lack of a voucher or rebate won’t prevent them from purchasing an EV. It makes sense that the same thinking would apply to e-bikes.

A voucher that takes $2000 off a cargo e-bike could make a significant difference for a low income family with a couple of kids. And taking $1500 off the cost of an e-bike could open up the possibility of a longer commute to a better job, while also cutting commuting costs.

Included with the phone holder is a handlebar-mounted button for the horn to make it easy to reach, but a word of warning to shoppers: The holder uses its speaker for the horn, which means the sound will be directed at the rider, not ahead of the rider.

One challenge some riders may face is finding the optimal angle for the phone holder so that the screen can be seen while also pointing the light at an angle so that it illuminates the road or path ahead of the rider.

Arguably, the best feature of the Pimp My Bike phone holder is that it combines so many different functions in a single item that attaches to the handlebar. There are products that provide each of these functions, but most bars lack the room to clamp so many individual accessories on. For less than $150, a rider can enjoy all of these functions with just one clamp.

Electric Bike Co. XL Comfort Saddle Review, 2024

Beyond the question everyone comes to us with, which is, “What e-bike should I buy?” the number one question we field is what is the most comfortable seat out there. Naturally, every e-bike maker thinks they are putting excellent saddles on their e-bikes, but having sat on hundreds of seats we can verify that they are not all the same. We’re here to review the Electric Bike Co. XL Comfort Saddle and will explain why this is our go-to for greater comfort.

There is no one key to what makes the Electric Bike Co. XL Comfort Saddle better than nearly all other bike seats out there, and that’s part of its secret. But there are a few clues to why it is so successful. Its size is the biggest (haha) reason riders like this saddle so much. It’s larger than most seats on the market. Size matters because greater surface area means less pressure on any one part of your keister and that means feeling better supported.

Why Ride A Fat Tire E-Bike?

So let’s say you’re in the market for an e-bike, whether it’s your first, or your next, and you’re contemplating something that will allow you to ride on more than paved roads and paths. And maybe you’ve even eyed some fat-tire e-bikes as you cruise the web. What you may not know is that fat-tire e-bikes are some of the most versatile e-bikes on the market and there are more reasons to consider one than you may know. Here’s our list of seven reasons why you might want to pick a fat-tire e-bike for yourself.

Remarkably stable and confident ride

The #1 feedback we hear from people after they try a fat-tire e-bike for the first time is that they were wowed by how stable the ride was and how much confidence that gave them as they road. Feeling confident and secure is a big deal, and there may not be a more forgiving ride than that offered by a fat-tire e-bike.

There are several reasons for the stability and confidence riders feel. The first are those big wheels and tires. The heavier a wheel, the more gyroscopic effect it will generate as it spins, which will make the e-bike easier to balance. The rider won’t have to do much to keep the e-bike going straight once it is moving; in fact, a fat-tire e-bike will balance at lower speeds than any other sort of e-bike.

Those big, soft tires are less likely to be deflected if you ride over a root or rock than they are to simply roll over them, and less front wheel deflection means fewer surprises, again, adding to the rider’s confidence.

Another reason riders feel so confident on fat-tire e-bikes is that the position most riders are afforded is fairly upright, making it easier for the rider to look around and take stock of their surroundings, be they natural wonders or traffic.

Versatility

Exploring dirt roads, gravel paths and other natural-surface trails can be terrific fun, but unless that’s all you want to do, it’s handy to have an e-bike that will also allow you to make a run to the store or commute to work. Big tires roll just as well on pavement as they do on dirt, a bit faster, in fact—because a harder surface is always faster.

With a fat-tire e-bike you get a degree of flexibility in use that other e-bikes struggle to match. During the week you can ride to work and then spend the weekend exploring the wilds.

Unmatched comfort

Among hard-tail e-bikes, that is, e-bikes that don’t feature rear suspension, you can’t find an e-bike that offers a more comfortable ride than a fat-tire model. We don’t often discuss this, but optimal pressure for a four-in.-wide tire is less than 10 psi, and it can approach 5 psi if the tires are being run tubeless, rather than with inner tubes.

Running such low pressures makes the tires a bigger contributor to a rider’s comfort than a suspension fork. This is because a suspension fork does very little to give a rider comfort at the saddle, and how comfortable we are where we sit has a bigger effect on our overall perception of comfort than how comfortable our hands are.

Traction that can’t be beat

The combination of knobby tires and a “footprint” bigger than a toddler’s shoe means that a fat-tire e-bike enjoys traction in the dirt that can’t be matched by any other sort of tire. Traction is one of those dimensions of a rider’s experience that also influences how confident they feel when riding. And traction, unlike calcium, is something you can never get too much of.

Also helpful is how as tire pressure goes down and rider comfort goes up, so does traction, stacking two benefits in one variable.

Floats on both sand and snow

The softer the surface a rider chooses, the bigger the fat-tire e-bike’s tire footprint grows. That means that on surfaces such as sand or snow, a fat-tire e-bike “floats” on top, rather than sinking into the sand or snow, the way our feet do. This also holds true in forests where soft pine duff might make up much of the riding surface. The one place it isn’t a benefit is in mud because to gain traction in mud, you need to slice through it to the firm soil below in order to find traction.

If you live in a place with lots of sand (say near a beach or desert) or a locale with snowy winters, fat-tire e-bikes are the only way to ride.

Powerful motors

The big wheels and tires of a fat-tire e-bike require a strong, stiff frame to maintain solid control (again, a rider’s sense of control is related to their level of confidence). As a result, a fat-tire e-bike is a heavy beast, even before you add a motor and battery. To overcome their weight and give the rider a sense of easy performance, they need powerful motors. Most of the fat-tire e-bikes we test are equipped with 750W hub motors that can peak at 1000 or more watts. There are a few fat-tire e-bikes equipped with even bigger motors.

With so much muscle at your disposal, riders enjoy all the benefits of the frame’s stiffness while not being hindered by the e-bike’s weight. That’s a win-win, for sure. The powerful motor also means that they are terrific performers on hills and accelerate away from traffic lights like few other kinds of e-bike. And combine a fat-tire e-bike with a big motor and a torque sensor and you get a remarkably responsive ride.

Fewer flat tires

It’s a fact that the more a balloon is inflated and that rubber drawn tighter and tighter over a greater volume of air, the easier it is to pop. Those skinny tires on racing bikes just look for excuses to flat. By contrast, a larger tire with very little air pressure in it is difficult to puncture. Whether we’re talking a rock, nail or piece of glass, a fat tire is more likely to deform around the object than be pierced by it.

Some fat-tire e-bikes are equipped with tires and rims that are tubeless compatible. This means that the tire and tube can be removed, the rim wrapped with a special air-tight tubeless tape and then the tire can be remounted, sealant added and that further reduces the chance for a flat and even if the tire suffers a puncture, the sealant will fill the hole and prevent the tire from going completely flat. Tubeless setups also allow a rider to run even lower pressure than you can with tubes, further improving its resistance to cuts.

Weighing needs

The combination of a fat-tire e-bike’s stability and comfort combined with its difficult-to-beat versatility is often all a shopper needs to conclude that a fat-tire e-bike is the way to go, and we would have no reason to disagree. For anyone who might still be on the fence, we’re happy to point out a few more reasons why an e-bike with 4-in.-wide tires can fit your needs.

One final factor to keep in mind is that many of the fat-tire models we’ve tested, including our best performers, retail for less than $2000. Buying a fat-tire e-bike doesn’t come with a price premium; they are competitive with commuters and cruisers alike.

Sena M1 EVO EMTB Helmet Review 2024

When is a helmet not just a helmet? We don’t mean to ask a riddle in a review, but the Sena M1 EVO MTB helmet does more than protect your head. Sure, it protects your head—it carries certification from the CPSC—but it includes a safety taillight as well as a sound system that provides a host of interesting functions, including acting as an intercom with other riders. In our review of the Sena M1 EVO helmet we will take a look inside this exciting helmet.

Let’s get the basics of the helmet out of the way: This MTB helmet carries certifications both for the U.S. (CPSC 1203) and the EU (EN 1078), so potential buyers can be confident that this helmet meets basic safety standards. It comes in two sizes to cover heads ranging from 55 to 63cm in circumference. And despite the light and electronics, it weighs only 340g (12 oz.), which is right in line with many other mountain bike helmets.

So what makes this a mountain bike helmet? The visor. Sena makes other models specifically for road riding, such as the R1 EVO. The visor is helpful for anytime a rider is moving in and out of wooded areas; suddenly riding into bright sunshine can make it hard to see the trail and not having the sun in your eyes (thanks to a visor) means your eyes don’t need as much time to adjust when you ride into a wooded area. The reason this isn’t considered a helmet for the road is one of speed, not style. Above 20 mph, the wind will grab the visor and push the helmet around on your head, which isn’t comfortable and reduces the helmet’s ability to protect you in the event of a fall.

What makes this helmet remarkable is its mesh communications system. Mesh is a means of connecting devices that is similar to Bluetooth, but not the same. Unlike Bluetooth, mesh allows a number of devices to connect to each other without needing a hub, plus they can connect over greater distances. Practically speaking, it means that a group of six friends could go for a ride and be spread out over several hundred yards and maintain communication. Suppose one rider takes a wrong turn; as long as they are still within the Sena M1 EVO’s 900m (2953 ft.—more than a half mile) range, riders can check in with each other and then find their way back. Mesh is also handy because it offers a more stable connection; Bluetooth is an awesome technology, but it can be very fussy.

The system offers multiple communication channels, which is handy should you find yourself overhearing a conversation that’s not part of your group. The helmet sports its own speakers and mic and the sound quality is surprisingly thanks, in part to mic and speaker placement, but also thanks to noise-canceling circuitry. This is not like trying to talk on a smartphone while riding.

Thanks to the Sena smartphone app, users can receive GPS directions, listen to fitness app cues and listen to music. But don’t take our word for what a terrific design the Sena M1 EVO is; it won the Eurobike (Europe’s biggest bike trade show) Award and a reddot smart product design award.
