Retrospec Valen Rev+ E-Bike Review

A fresh take on a classic moto aesthetic, speed to match, and the range to go from across campus to across town!

The Retrospec Valen Rev+ is an absolute blast, earning a thumbs-up from everyone in our office who hopped on for a ride. This moto-inspired e-bike from Retrospec has a unique blend of style, practicality, and a whole lot of fun.

Born in 2009 as a budget-friendly bike brand for college students, Retrospec has since grown into a diverse outdoor gear company. Yet, they still retain that core focus on accessibility and enjoyment that made their original bikes a hit.

First things first, moto bikes have a reputation for having quick acceleration to zip around town or across campus and here the Valen Rev+ did not disappoint. The 750W motor paired to its cadence sensor activation made this motor stand out for sharp, punchy accelerations that consistently left smiles on our faces.

We found the Valen Rev+ extremely comfortable to ride thanks to its saddle and 20×4″ tires; it isn’t built for long-distance touring. As is common with moto- or moped-style e-bikes, its design is likely to limit comfortable pedaling for taller riders. It did, however, excel at zipping around town with its powerful motor and cool, eye-catching retro-inspired design.

Another nod to Retrospec goes to the bike’s suspension. While it does not have full suspension, the Valen Rev+ has a double crowned front fork with 100mm of travel; we found it to do a good job of eating up road imperfections along our route and even light off-roading.

Priced at just $1699, with a 28 mph top speed and 720Wh battery, we were intrigued by the Valen Rev+’s potential. After extensive testing, we’ve gathered several hours of ride time and loads of data to share. In this Retrospec Valen Rev+ review, we’ll dive into all of our testing results, initial impressions and help you decide if this e-moped from Retrospec is the right fit for you.

Say Hello to the JetCurrent Pro

Juiced introduces a premium folding e-bike with a powerful motor and huge battery.

Juiced Bikes has introduced their first folding e-bike. The JetCurrent Pro may look like other folding e-bikes you’ve seen, but this is no ordinary folding e-bike. This is a decidedly premium e-bike, as demonstrated by its $2500 price point. Juiced has created a folding e-bike that is a cut above at every turn.

It features the basics that we typically see with folding e-bikes. It is built with 20-in. wheels so that it will compact and easy to store or transport when folded. The step-thru frame uses a single hinge point with an easy-to-operate locking latch. The handlebar sits atop a folding mast. Folding pedals complete the package.

From there, the JetCurrent Pro takes a hard turn away from what we usually see. Juiced gave the JetCurrent Pro a 52V, 1200W brushless, geared hub motor that produces 105Nm of torque; the motor is powered by a 998Wh battery. Governing the motor we have a torque sensor, which will help give this high-powered e-bike very spirited acceleration. Juiced estimates that riders could see a range of 70 mi. or more.

The Juiced JetCurrent Pro can be ridden as a Class 2, 3 or Unlimited e-bike. When unlocked for Unlimited operation, it can be ridden as fast as 30 mph on throttle, or up to 34 mph with pedal assistance. We have a duty to point out that in many places, this e-bike will only be legal at Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) areas. Because it can exceed the 28 mph limit placed on Class 3 e-bikes, it won’t be street-legal in many communities.

While the 7-speed Shimano Altus drivetrain isn’t a step up from what we typically see, Juiced opted for a nicer trigger shifter that is easier to reach and shift. We often see folding e-bikes that struggle to reach 20 mph, or speeds above 20 mph due to a drivetrain that lacks a gear high enough for riders to pedal at those speeds. Juiced takes care of this by spec’ing a 60t chainring.

Juiced spec’d 4-piston Gemma hydraulic disc brakes with a 203mm rotor front and a 180mm rotor rear. This would be a very powerful brake setup on any e-bike, but because they’ve matched 4-piston brakes with a 203mm rotor in front and 20-in. wheels, this may be the most powerful brake setup we’ve ever seen. As wheels get smaller or rotors get bigger, braking force increases; using the largest available rotor with the smallest wheel we typically see on an adult e-bike along with 4-piston brakes means that the JetCurrent Pro will stop before reaching the proverbial dime.

If there has been one issue with the folding e-bike category it’s that the offerings are too similar. Because of Lectric’s dominance in the category thanks to the success of the Lectric XP 3.0. As a result, most companies are competing with the idea that a successful folding e-bike needs to cost $1000.

The Juiced JetCurrent Pro goes in a different direction, rethinking what value in a folding e-bike can be. At roughly $2500, this isn’t affordable the way the Lectric XP 3.0 is, but the JetCurrent Pro offers a number of features the XP 3.0 can’t touch: a 1200W motor, 988Wh battery, a drivetrain that can pedal at speeds north of 20 mph, 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes and a torque sensor. Even the other details like the grips and lights are a step up from what we usually see. Like other folding e-bikes we see, it comes with front and rear lights, fenders, a rear rack and kickstand.

Currently, the Juiced JetCurrent Pro is available for pre-order. Delivery will begin in June. It’s being offered at an introductory price right now; its retail price is several hundred dollars higher.

Lectric Xpress First Look Review: Their Latest $1000 Ride!

Hot on the heels of the release of the ONE, Lectric eBikes has just released another new e-bike model. The Lectric XPress is a commuter and as Lectric has accomplished several times before, they have managed to redefine our expectations for what a brand can deliver at the $1000 price point. In our Lectric XPress spec review, we will dig into just what makes this e-bike such an amazing value.

While its appearance is a bit different from most Lectric models, there are a number of features in the XPress that will look familiar to fans of this Arizona-based brand.

Because the Lectric XPress is meant to be a road-oriented commuter, they’ve given it larger wheels (27.5 in.) than some of their other models. Rolling on those wheels is an aluminum frame with a suspension fork. Lectric chose a 500W hub motor powered by a 499Wh battery. It uses the same 7-speed Shimano drivetrain seen on many of their models. They’ve also given it hydraulic disc brakes to make it easy to control in a variety of riding conditions.

Other commuter-friendly touches include a torque sensor, 2.1-in.-wide slick tires for efficiency, and an accessory package that includes lights and a heavy-duty kickstand.

Lectric XPress Spec Review: Bike Overview

The Lectric XPress is designed for the needs of a commuter. What that means is that Lectric prioritized efficiency and ease of use. The XPress can be set to operate as a Class 1 (maximum assist speed of 20 mph), Class 2 (20 mph max plus a throttle or Class 3 (28 mph max) e-bike. Buyers are presented with a couple of options: They can select either a traditional frame design or a step-thru version, as well as either a 500W motor paired with a 499Wh battery or a 750W motor powered by a 672Wh battery (for another $299).

Lectric XPress Review: Specs & Features

Frame and fork

Lectric produces the XPress in two different frame designs, a traditional diamond frame and a step-thru frame. While the traditional, or “step-over,” frame has a standover height of 29 in., making it appropriate to taller riders, the step-thru edition has a standover height of just 18.5 in., which makes it ideal for buyers of more modest stature, as well as riders with limited range of motion.

The TC•Eighty suspension fork gives, as its name suggests, 80mm of travel, which is plenty for an e-bike meant to stay on the road. This will soak up rough roads, driveway lips and speed bumps. The fork is designed with a thru-axle, which is a nice feature. Budget-oriented forks can sometimes suffer from insufficient stiffness and a thru-axle will help stiffen the fork. It will help the Lectric XPress behave more predictably and handle in a way that will inspire confidence in the rider.

One other thru-axle benefit: For anyone who has ever worried about whether or not they correctly adjusted a quick-release lever, a thru-axle removes that guesswork.

Total weight capacity for the Lectric XPress is 330 lbs., including loads on racks and/or baskets.

Motor and battery

While Lectric has spec’d 500W hub motors on several of their models, the 500W brushless, geared hub motor chosen for the XPress is an all-new motor, one that Lectric claims is 400 percent quieter than other 500W motors on Lectric models. Lectric reports that the motor produces 55Nm of torque. That’s not a huge number, but it’s plenty to get a rider up to speed or over hills.

The 499Wh battery is integrated into the down tube of the frame and it is certified to UL’s 2271 standard for batteries, meaning this meets the highest safety standard available for lithium-ion batteries spec’d in e-bikes. Lectric estimates a range of 45 mi. per charge.

Now those details pertain to the $1000 base model. For another $300, Lectric offers a souped-up version with a 750W motor and a 672Wh battery. Torque jumps to 85Nm and range, per their estimate, climbs to 60 mi. per charge.

And in a first at this price point, Lectric has given the XPress a torque sensor. What this means for the commuter is that their acceleration—such as when pulling away from a stop—will be guided by how hard they pedal. Pedal a little harder and get more acceleration, but back off on the pedals and you’ll find that the motor backs off as well, which makes adjusting your speed for changing conditions both quick and easy. And while some riders enjoy the effect known as ghost pedaling, it can be disconcerting to some who want to exercise more control over their e-bike’s acceleration and top speed. E-bikes with torque sensors make the experience of pedaling an e-bike seamless, with no lag between pedaling and motor action.

Because it ships as a Class 2 e-bike, the Lectric XPress comes with a thumb throttle, which will give riders a helping hand any time their legs are tired.

Componentry

Lectric gave the XPress quality alloy components. The alloy bar has a bit of ride, though not much sweep. What this means is that the rider will lean forward a bit when riding, adding more weight to the front wheel, which will help the XPress’s handling.

While they didn’t include a rear rack and fenders, Lectric did give the XPress front and rear lights as well as a heavy-duty kickstand.

Drivetrain, brakes and wheels

In choosing 27.5-in. wheels for the XPress, Lectric gave this commuter a feature that is important for anyone wishing to get around town quickly: confident handling. Small wheels are great for maneuverability and ease of storage, but for anyone who wants to cruise at Class 3 speeds—anything north of 20 mph—an e-bike needs to give up a bit of that maneuverability in order to feel stable at speed. Going with 27.5-in. wheels means that a rider can hit cruising speed and feel comfortable even on rough roads. Larger wheels also roll over bumps more easily.

The 27.5 x 2.1-in. slick tires balance comfort with efficiency. These tires will give riders great traction in turns, but will also be easy to get up to speed.

The Shimano drivetrain features a 46-tooth chainring and a 7-speed freewheel with an 11-28t spread; that makes for a roughly 260 percent gear range. With some previous Lectric models with 20-in. wheels, we’ve struggled to go faster than 20 mph when we unlock them for Class 3 riding. That was due to a lack of a gear high enough to be able to pedal at speeds much above 20 mph. The Lectric XPress won’t suffer that problem. The 46 x 11 top gear combined with the 27.5-in. wheels should make it easy for a rider to hit a Class 3 cruising speed near 28 mph.

Another nice touch to the Lectric XPress was the decision to go with hydraulic disc brakes and pair them with 180mm rotors. This setup will give the Lectric XPress great stopping power in all conditions as well as the ability to gently scrub speed in turns.

EBR’s Lectric XPress First Look Review:

The Lectric XPress is yet another example of what this company does so well: They manage to create e-bikes that defy what we think an affordable e-bike can offer. This e-bike is a stunningly good value.

We’d like to see them offer more colors than black and white—the step-over comes in black, the step-thru in white, but that’s a minor quibble.

For anyone who has counted and/or pinched pennies on their way to saving up for an e-bike, the Lectric XPress presents a difficult-to-beat value. And as much as we are left slack-jawed by the $1000 price point for the 500W motor version, we would encourage anyone looking at this e-bike to think hard about dropping the extra $300 for the upgrade to the 750W motor.

In making the additional investment, the buyer will be rewarded with an e-bike that will offer faster acceleration and more hill-climbing power, as well as a bit more muscle for pedaling at Class 3 speeds, not to mention a bigger battery that will increase the rider’s range. Oh, and an extra battery. Yep, you read that right: Go for the upgrade and they will send you a spare battery for free.

For anyone who wants an affordable Class 2 or Class 3 commuter, the Lectric XPress will be tough to beat.

The iconic Electric Bike Company (EBC) should be well-known to fans of the beach cruiser style. Their e-bike models almost exclusively display the category’s defining retro curves, and all feature upright positioning and big, squishy saddles for long-lasting comfort on casual rides. The EBC Model A doesn’t break the mold (too much), but it also doesn’t break the bank! We take a look at this basic-but-still-feature-packed cruiser in this Electric Bike Company Model A review.

With e-bike costs coming down over time, we’ve started to see a new wave of models in the $1,500 price range that include once-uncommon features such as turn signals and cargo racks. The Model A is one such e-bike, with an included package of commuter-friendly features we always appreciate, and quite a few extras we don’t often see.

Did we mention this bike’s affordability? Until now, Electric Bike Company models have started around the $2,000 mark, with costs potentially increasing quickly depending on what customization options are selected. In contrast with the company’s other bikes, the Model A keeps things simple on the customization side of things – but this makes it super budget-friendly!

While many of the bike’s components come from overseas, the Model A (like all EBC bikes) is painted, assembled, inspected, and tested in the USA. A Curvy, Cost-Friendly Cruiser with an Incredibly Low Step-Thru Frame

SixThreeZero Simple Step-Thru 500W E-Bike Review

Just as the phrase “beach cruiser” evokes the warm feeling of summer sun and the scent of salt air, the words “Simple Step-Thru” in relation to an e-bike bring to mind relaxation, comfort, and accessibility. In this Sixthreezero Simple Step-Thru 500W review, we discuss the ride feel and real-world performance of this curvy, colorful cruiser.

In our testing, we found that the Simple Step-Thru lived up to its name; this is one of the “step-thru-iest” e-bikes we have ever seen! We found it incredibly easy to mount and dismount thanks to the bike’s wavy, remarkably low down tube, which brings its standover height down to a minimal 10.5 inches.

In our opinion, this makes the Simple Step-Thru suitable for aging riders with disabilities or limited range of motion – or those who want a simple and easy bike to get on and ride.

The bike’s reserved power was another aspect geared toward seniors or those who have not used a bike for years. With a 500W rear-hub motor, the Simple Step-Thru had power when it was wanted/needed, but in most cases its throttle and pedal assist system (PAS) felt modest and gradual instead of punchy and overpowered.

We appreciated the bike’s reserved nature, though some riders may prefer the ability to adjust its speed limits. Additionally, we found the bike’s motor engagement to be somewhat inconsistent.

Fans of beach cruisers will, however, find many characteristic features present on the Simple Step-Thru, including a relaxed and comfortable riding position. With a thick, cushioned saddle, wide handlebars, and upright positioning, we found the bike to be thoroughly comfortable and enjoyable to ride.

Study Reveals Last-Mile Cargo E-Bikes Could Help Save NYC $240 Million a Year

Combining delivery microhubs and cargo bikes could solve the problem posed by double-parked delivery vans.

A study of New York traffic revealed that double-parked delivery trucks cost the city more than $240 million each year in lost productivity. The study, produced by Columbia University’s School for Professional Studies on behalf of Open Plans, found that a double-parked truck will delay drivers by two minutes and affects 43 cars on average. That lost productivity costs the city $243 million per year. Additionally, that double-parked truck causes .06 grams of particulate matter (PM2.5) to be released into the air, degrading the air quality.

Some of the individual examples helped to drive home the severity of the problem. One double-parked e-commerce vehicle caused problems for 73 vehicles, delaying the vehicles 3.23 minutes resulting in 235.79 minutes lost overall.

Some factors the study didn’t account for, such as the emissions released if that double-parked truck is idling.

The study concluded with a number of recommendations. In looking at solutions in other locations, such as London and Paris, they recommended a number of changes to how deliveries are made in Manhattan and the Five Boroughs: Loading zones at buildings, off-hour deliveries (i.e., night time), smaller delivery trucks (and better utilization of the space in them) and microhubs.

The microhub idea is an intriguing solution. It has already been shown to work in London and Paris; in Paris there is a former bus station that is being used as a distribution center for local deliveries.

The study explained that microhubs combined with cargo bike and pedestrian deliveries would make a notable difference in traffic delays and pollution. To make such a wholesale change, though, they suggested that the government would need to offer financial incentives to encourage delivery companies to pull internal combustion engine (ICE) delivery vehicles from the roads.

While the study did not directly address the use of cargo e-bikes specifically, rather just cargo bikes as a whole, the study’s authors took a hard look at studies of cargo bike use in deliveries in Antwerp and London. Utilizing cargo bikes for last-mile deliveries was high among the recommendations, but its larger concern was how to set up delivery microhubs, which would then make cargo bike deliveries a viable option.

Are Low-Priced Carbon Frames the Next Big E-Bike Trend?

An Indiegogo campaign is priced low enough to make us wonder.

OFIITO is a new carbon fiber e-bike being sold on Indiegogo. OFIITO claims the e-bike will weigh just 30.2 lbs. (13.7kg), and is built with a 250W brushless, geared hub motor and 360Wh battery. Its biggest point of interest may be its carbon fiber frame—well, that and its $1999 price tag.

Just days into their campaign, OFIITO’s carbon fiber urban racer has already met its minimum funding goal, meaning that everyone who has pledged $1999 will receive their e-bike. Delivery is set for August 2024.

The OFIITO e-bike is intriguing. It includes a carbon fiber frame that will be produced in five sizes. All the cables and hoses will be run internally for a clean look and improved aerodynamics. It features a torque sensor, hydraulic disc brakes, an 11-speed drivetrain and an integrated bar/stem combo as well as a headlight that is integrated into the frame.

Considering the carbon fiber frame and 11-speed drivetrain, it seems likely that at $1999—which OFIITO says is a 50 percent discount from the regular price of $3999—OFIITO will be losing money. Considering this is Indiegogo, which is a way of funding a product when you lack deep pockets by taking pledges for orders, we can’t help but wonder how they can afford to sell an e-bike at a loss and make a go of this. That, in turn, makes us worry about whether or not the company will be around long-term to support their buyers.

We have a habit of reminding our readers that there’s no such thing as a free lunch, that when a deal looks too good to be true … it is. If it was possible to sell a carbon fiber e-bike with an 11-speed drivetrain for $2000 and make a profit, someone would already be doing it.

The question remains, though: Will low-priced carbon fiber frames be the next big e-bike trend? The answer is, probably not. Carbon fiber is an inherently fragile material. What makes carbon fiber attractive as a material for bikes and e-bikes is that it can allow a skilled engineer to design and build an extremely stiff and light bicycle frame. But it’s not especially durable. And the material, unlike aluminum, is expensive. The process of laying up the sheets of carbon fiber to make the frame is labor intensive, and that labor must be skilled. By contrast, while building an aluminum frame requires some skill, it doesn’t require as much skill and it is substantially faster.

The cost on carbon fiber frames is dropping, but it seems unlikely that they will ever be as affordable as aluminum frames, but even if they do become that affordable, there will still be the issue of durability. An e-bike with a carbon fiber frame isn’t something you want to lock up to a bike rack outside of work. All it would take is one good bump against the metal rack to damage the frame, making it unrideable. Aluminum frames aren’t indestructible, but they can take quite a bit of abuse before they are compromised.

Salsa Cycles Introduces New E-Bikes – Morraine & Tributary

Salsa has introduced two different models, each in four builds.

Salsa Cycles, one of the original mountain bike brands, has introduced several new e-bikes ahead of the 2024 Sea Otter Classic. The Moraine and the Notch are two new eMTBs, while the Confluence and the Tributary are new gravel e-bikes.

Both eMTBs feature split pivot suspension designs. The Moraine is a trail e-bike made to be versatile across lots of different terrain, while the Notch is an enduro e-bike, meant for aggressive riders. Both eMTBs comes in two different builds and start at $4999.

The Confluence features an aluminum frame and carbon fiber fork and uses a Mahle 250W, 40Nm hub motor. A 250Wh internal battery powers the hub, which Salsa estimates can offer riders up to 45 mi. of range per charge. The Confluence comes in four different builds—two with a flat bar and two with a drop bar—ranging from $2499 up to $3499.

The Tributary is meant for riders looking for adventure. The aluminum frame is built with a Bosch Performance Line Speed mid-drive motor, producing 250W and 85Nm of torque to yield a Class 3 gravel e-bike with a maximum assist speed of 28 mph. A 625Wh Bosch internal battery powers the system. The Tributary comes in both 1x and 2x configurations and two of the four builds are equipped with a suspension fork for those B roads that were last maintained in the Eisenhower administration. The Tributary comes in four different builds beginning at $5499.

Check This Out: A Motorized Bike Trailer That Cleans Bike Lanes

This innovative street sweeper uses an e-scooter motor to pick up debris.

Anyone who has ridden a few miles on an e-bike on public streets has almost certainly noticed that there is more debris—especially broken glass—at the side of the road than in the traffic lane. The way cars cause debris to be blown to the side of the road means that the tires most susceptible to flats—those on bikes and e-bikes—have to ride through most of the stuff that can cause flats.

One cyclist got the idea to create a street sweeper that he could pull along behind his bicycle. Pierre Lermant, a data science and mechanical engineer in Silicon Valley got tired of all the debris in his local bike lanes and decided to do something about it.

Lermant built a chain-driven prototype using 2x4s and an industrial sweeping brush. Word of Lermant’s invention got around and about 18 months after constructing his prototype, engineer Cedric Eveleigh got in touch.

Eveleigh is known for his Supre Drive drivetrain for mountain bikes. It uses a single pulley rear derailleur positioned between the cassette and the chainrings, rather than below the cassette. Eveleigh had moved to the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia and was part of a brigade of volunteers who would go out and manually sweep bike lanes. He and his friends did so as a way to draw attention to the fact that the local government didn’t sweep the lanes enough. Lermant’s idea struck him as a way to combine riding with sweeping.

Eveleigh ran across Lermant’s design in a Google search and got in touch with an offer to help with engineering and manufacturing. Their collaboration—partly online and partly in-person—has resulted in two market-ready designs.

A Motorized Bike Trailer That Cleans Bike Lanes

One version of the Bike Lane Sweeper pushes dirt and debris to the side and is intended for use in rural areas where it can be swept off the road. Another version of the sweeper collects what is swept into a bin that can be removed and emptied.

Both designs use an aluminum frame with sides made from either ABS or plywood and then an e-bike battery powers a scooter motor that spins the brush. A wireless switch mounted on the bar allows the rider to turn the sweeper on and off.

The sweepers use a Burley trailer hitch that is compatible with most rear dropout designs.

By the time you’ve ridden a few thousand miles, you’ve had a flat tire (or maybe ten). Often, those flats are caused by things that a properly swept street would have removed. Glass, nails, staples, rocks and more could be removed from busy bike lanes and bike paths. This is a terrific idea and design and we hope it takes off.
