The rule “you get what you pay for” usually holds true, especially when it comes to electric bike buying. But, while more money usually equates to more quality in the e-bike world, there are some brands that prove to be the exception to this rule. Ride1UP is one such brand.

In this Ride1UP 700 Series review, we take a look at the value-priced brand’s flagship commuter bike and unpack how, by using smart component choices, Ride1UP managed to squeeze a whole ‘lotta performance out of a very inexpensive e-bike.

Built around a 750W rear hub motor and specced with a full Shimano groupset, Tektro hydraulic disk brakes and sporting all the commuter accessories you’d expect, we found the Ride1UP 700 Series to be a surprisingly high-performing value commuter. Through a gauntlet of testing, including a hill test, range test and brake test, we did our best to parse out how this e-bike performs in the real world.

Say hello to the Packer 1! With the brand’s signature design and two cool colors, the Packer certainly has good looks… but does its performance match its style? The reviewers at Electric Bike Report answer that question in this Velotric Packer 1 review.

With a roomy rear rack that can carry up to 176 lbs of kids, groceries, or gear, the Packer 1 is a workhorse! Velotric offers a huge spread of accessories including two bundles geared toward families. The bike has a 440-lb total payload capacity, so between the rear rack and the optional front basket, there’s plenty of room for everyone and everything!

In our experience, the Packer 1 rode like a dream with its upright riding position and comfortable contact points. The bike’s plush saddle, curved handlebars, and ergonomic rubber grips felt great even after long test rides around our local bike paths.

Despite its size, we found that the Packer 1 also had surprisingly good handling! The bike uses a 20” rear wheel to keep its center of gravity low and a 26” front wheel for smoothness and control. The combination paid off with an unexpectedly responsive ride even with added cargo weight.

In the world of electric bikes, specific models often get updated — sometimes yearly — and occasionally, models are sunsetted in favor of something new, better or just more in line with what consumers are asking for.

In the case of Rad Power Bikes’ electric folding bike, some combination of all of the above appears to have happened: The RadMini 4 is out and the RadExpand 5 is in.

Though the name has changed and the bike does look quite a bit different, the larger numeral at the end of the new bike’s title suggests there is some continuity between the folding bike formerly known as the Mini 4 and the new model, known as the Expand 5.

In this review of the Rad Power Bikes RadExpand 5, we put the Seattle-based brand’s new electric folding bike to the test to find out what’s new, what’s the same and why those details matter. The EBR offices feel like Christmas year-round; nearly every week there is a fun new product waiting to be unboxed and tested, and the excitement factor hasn’t warn off on me in the least. But each bike hits in a different way, and few filled me with the same level of excitement as did the Ride1UP Revv 1 Hardtail review. Simply put, this moto-inspired ride looks incredible, and the ride matches it’s looks.

The Revv 1 HT runs off a 52V, 750W bafang hub motor that prodcues a whopping 95Nm of torque. Translation: it moves fast horizontally or even on an incline. It’s got a simplified drive system that leans into throttle usage, and the 20″ wheels zoom over city streets with ease while hugging the road into turns nicely. It’s surpisingly easy to handle (so long as you don’t mind speed) thanks to it’s low center of gravity and the extra width of the 4″ tires.

The hardtail is the more economical choice (it has a full-suspension sibling – the Ride1UP Revv 1 FS – that we reviewed a while back) of the Revv 1 models, but make no mistake, it’s still feature-packed and plenty comfortable. The FS was one of our picks for the best e-bikes of the year, but there’s an argument that the HT we reviewing here provides an even better value.

The Electric Bike Report team is clearly impressed with all this bike has to offer, but the key question with any review still remains: does the Ride1UP Revv 1 HT make sense for you? Aventon Soltera 2 Step-Through Review | Responsive & Agile

Lightweight, Authentic Pedal Feel, Robust Motor, Good Value for sub-$1400 bike

The Aventon Soltera.2 Step-Through we reviewed proved to be one of the brand’s best feeling motors to date. The 350W rear hub motor enables riders to feel like a powerhouse cyclist as opposed to riding a powerhouse of a bike. Aventon’s use of a torque sensor focusses more on ride feel, and it can provide subtle assistance that make you feel ready to take on a long, winding road, or summit any city slope like a champ.

This bike provides a lot of commuter-friendly features as well such as the integrated brake lights with turn signal functionality, a responsive drivetrain with an ultra-satisfying Revoshift shifter, and overall handling that’s responsive and fast thanks to the 680mm handlebar and 700x38c Kenda tires.

The Step-Through label is a bit misleading, we’d say it’s more of a mid-step, but it’s undeniably easier to mount and makes it friendlier to shorter riders or anybody who wants an easier time swinging a leg over the top tube.

It’s not a perfect ride, the motor seems to fall short of top-end class 3 speeds, but it’s whisper-quiet and the overall look is understated enough that people will have to squint to see the signs that it’s an e-bike.

Stealthy, snappy, and simple to use; the Aventon Soltera.2 Step-through has a lot going for it that’ll grab the attention of those in the market for a lightweight city e-bike.

Ride1UP LMT’D V2 Review | All-Purpose E-Bike For All?

Many of the e-bikes we’ve reviewed here at Electric Bike Report offer a variety of specialized features; phone mounts, electronic horns, high/low beam headlights, etc. The Ride1UP LMT’D V2, on the other hand, keeps things basic but functional. In our review, we discuss the real world performance of this simple but seriously effective commuter!

The first thing that stood out to us about the LMT’D V2 was its analog feel. With a torque sensor, its motor adapted proportionally to our effort up to certain limits. As it shipped, four of the bike’s five pedal assist settings were limited to half or below of the motor’s potential output, so in most cases we found the ride to be reserved and natural.

Another benefit of this conservative programming was great range! With limited output, the LMT’D’s 750W rear-hub motor consumed the charge of the removable 48V, 672 Wh battery slowly. Ride1UP advertises a range of 30-50 miles, but we were able to exceed both figures in our tests.

Due to its simplicity, our group consensus was that the LMT’D V2 is just a good bike without trying to be anything more. It does, however, have its flaws. We appreciate the absence of too many bells and whistles, but we were surprised by its absence of brake lights. And like many of the brand’s e-bikes, the LMT’D’s sizing is on the small side, which may leave riders in the 6’ range feeling slightly cramped.

Aventon Abound Review | A Well-Rounded Cargo Experience

Possibilities abound with this comfortable, capable cargo-carrying addition to Aventon’s lineup.

Since the release of their first e-bike in 2019, Aventon has expanded and diversified its electric bike lineup to include a model for just about everyone. Their catalog of e-bikes has included a utilitarian commuter, a stashable folder, a daring fat tire model, and many more. Now, the company has rounded out their selection with a dedicated cargo hauler! To our delight, we had the opportunity to review the new Aventon Abound before it was released to the public.

While our test bike came with some extra bells and whistles, we were happy to see that the standard version of the Abound still includes functional essentials like an extended rear rack and running boards, as well as some onboard storage. This set of features is just the beginning though; Aventon offers a full range of accessories to expand the Abound’s usefulness.

Weight carrying capability is (nearly) everything on a cargo bike, so we were definitely not disappointed to see the Abound rated for a whopping 440 lbs of total payload capacity. With additional accessories like bags, baskets, and seats, that can include additional riders or a lot of gear.

Like the other new and/or updated models in Aventon’s lineup that we have reviewed, the Abound features a torque sensor that gives the bike a natural and responsive feel.

I’ve recommended many fat tire e-bikes over the years to family, friends, and neighbors—even if that’s not the style they initially indicated they were looking for. Why? Because so many people have remarked on how stable they find the wide tires. I love recommending them to anyone who hasn’t ridden a bike in years (or even decades).

One area where I often hesitated was when the bike was clearly more than the person would need. Not all fat tire bikes are built to split commuting and offroading 50/50, after all, but several are designed with that purpose in mind, so sometimes, when I recommend a fat bike, the features could be a little more than what the person needed.

That’s what was refreshing about my review of the Retrospec Koa Rev 2 ST. This bike is a solidly built, and appropriately-spec’d model that excels at making leisurely trips around town or as a comfortable commuter. It keeps the price low by using more modest components.

The Koa Rev 2 has a 500W motor and a 500Wh battery to match. It’s a pleasant and controlled ride in its shipped Class 2 settings, but it shows a noticeable speed boost in Class 3 mode—a difference I appreciated when I wanted to move faster. The low step-over height, wide tires, and suspension fork make for a smooth sailing experience across either nicely paved roads or bumpier surfaces.

This bike has some wild side to it and will hold up fine at a campsite or on a fire road; people who need a more adventurous ride can consider its upgraded Plus model. It’s uncommon for an affordable brand to offer both a base and an upgraded model, so this is a nice rarity to find.

The bike is easy to maneuver on the roads, weighs under 70 lbs (a rarity for fat tire bikes), and comes in two attractive color options. It’s also available in a high-step model if you prefer a stiffer frame.

Lectric ONE Review | Stellar Tech At A Shockingly Low Cost!

This diminutive commuter e-bike punches well above its weight class in terms of tech, functionality, and power—all at an approachable price.

Like most industries, the e-bike market is often shaken when new technology is debuted or when a new model is priced well below the expected and established threshold based on its specs and features.

Lectric, a brand whose reputation was defined by breaking the norm with its highly affordable XP line of folding e-bikes, is no stranger to shaking things up. The ONE is the brand’s latest instance of redefining what is possible at a specific price point—and potentially one of its most impactful.

The Lectric ONE is a commuter e-bike packed with unexpected technology for its price just north of $2k. Most notably, it features a 6-speed Pinion gearbox with electronic shifting and automatic downshifting. It also sports a Gates Carbon belt connecting the gearbox to its lively 750W rear hub motor, making for a smooth, quiet, and low-maintenance experience.

Additionally, the ONE employs a cadence sensor to trigger its motor, using an array of 96 magnets (many others use just 12) for extremely rapid, responsive engagement. Like many of Lectric’s other e-bikes, the bike uses the brand’s PWR programming, which creates a more natural, analog-like pedal experience than traditional speed-based systems.

The term “SUV-style e-bike” has gained traction in recent years, referring to hybrid e-bikes designed for both work and play. These bikes combine the practicality of a commuter-capable ride for getting to and from work with the ruggedness needed for off-roading, whether it’s on local greenways or possibly blue trails. While owning dedicated bikes for each purpose would be ideal, most of us have limited budgets and finite garage space, making the rise of this versatile category easy to understand.

Here, we’re comparing two popular options on opposite ends of the pricing spectrum: the Velotric Summit 1 and the Specialized Turbo Tero X. The Specialized Turbo Tero X (specifically the 5.0 model we tested) is equipped with a mid-drive motor rated at 250W and 70Nm of torque. It’s designed for speed and excels at providing a seamless, natural ride—like a supercharged version of yourself.

While these bikes share plenty of overlap and are both capable of handling diverse tasks, their differences in design and performance will influence which one suits you best. It’s a bit like dessert preferences: my wife loves Black Forest cake, while I prefer German Chocolate. We’re both chocolate cake fans, but we enjoy our experience in different ways.
