This is a guest post from Peter Rosenfeld; not to be confused with me!  Peter Rosenfeld is a research engineer who lives in New Jersey just outside of Philadelphia. A long-term Vehicular Cyclist, he started using a Bionx ebike three years ago after medical problems made it difficult to continue bicycling.

The Electric Bike: Conveniences of a Car with the Advantages of a Bicycle

The word is getting out and people are enjoying electric bikes!

I have been thinking of quick ways to describe what an electric bike is all about to someone that has no idea what an electric bike is.

Sometimes quick catchy sounds bites can really help someone visualize what these e-bikes are all about.

So far I have come up with this; “Electric bikes combine some conveniences of a car with the advantages of a bicycle”.

The First Electric Bike Sharing Program in the US

Would you like to "borrow" an electric bike?

Imagine this: Instead of owning an electric bike you are able to “borrow” one for a while to run errands or just cruz around town.  After you are done using the bike you return it to an electric bike sharing station and you go on your way.

This idea is very similar to the Zip Car concept.  In fact there are a number of traditional bike sharing programs around the world, but now there is an electric bike sharing program being tested in the US at the University of Tennessee. Just as we started to get some hints of snow in Flagstaff, Arizona (yes it snows here!) this winter I called up a friend of mine and said I need a pair of those Schwalbe Winter Marathon studded snow tires so I can keep riding!  He had ridden them in previous winters and he said he was able to continue riding despite the snow and ice.
