Solar Electric Bike Wheel
Forbes reports that an intriguing solar e-wheel kit is to be premiered at the forthcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Apparently it will be exhibited by French firm Rool’in, but unfortunately details are brief.
Rool’in’s website only currently details its conventional kits which come in three wheel sizes, 20″, 26″ and 28″. The website boasts 5 minute fitting, Samsung batteries and a range of bewteen 30km and 50km depending on the wheel size used.
The kit is compliant with EU bike laws, coming with a pedelec sensor (the sensor can be bought as a separate kit to fit to a second bike, so the wheel can be swapped over quickly and easily). Prices are from €615. Here’s a video [Read more…]

SAL say ‘It is a new type of mobility that is smart, healthy and sustainable. It’s easy to use, low cost and provides benefits for individuals and society. Commuters traveling small distances are often stuck in traffic jams but can easily switch to the solar bike to experience the freedom and advantages of this technology.’ [Read more…]
Richard Branson has an electric bike and says “these (electric) bicycles could be used more in urban settings, cutting commute times and hopefully encouraging more people to get out of their cars and onto their bikes.”
According to a new e-bike study, “People travel twice as much on the electric bike, both in terms of kilometres, amount of trips, and as part of the total transportation”.
What if you never had to plug in your electric bike for a charge?
It looks like that could be a reality in the near future. The Dutch Solar Cycle is a new “S-Bike” that has solar panels built into both wheels to charge the e-bike battery.
An electric bike is a lightweight electric vehicle that does not require much energy to propel. In addition, your pedal power helps to offset the energy required. All of that leads to the reality of a solar powered electric bike, very cool!

For some that could be a reality with The Dutch Solar Cycle. It has solar panels built into the wheels so that it is always charging; even on cloudy days and when the panels are dirty. They claim that on a sunny day the battery can be fully charged in 4 to 6 hours.
Speaking of solar, there is now the world’s first solar bike path near Amsterdam! It’s surface is a bunch of solar panels that supply electricity to the grid. Very cool! Enjoy the following video of the SolaRoad: [Read more…]
