Sixthreezero Simple Step-Thru 500W Review, 2024
A Curvy, Cost-Friendly Cruiser with an Incredibly Low Step-Thru Frame
In our testing, we found that the Simple Step-Thru lived up to its name; this is one of the “step-thru-iest” e-bikes we have ever seen! We found it incredibly easy to mount and dismount thanks to the bike’s wavy, remarkably low down tube, which brings its standover height down to a minimal 10.5 inches.
In our opinion, this makes the Simple Step-Thru suitable for aging riders with disabilities or limited range of motion – or those who want a simple and easy bike to get on and ride.
The bike’s reserved power was another aspect geared toward seniors or those who have not used a bike for years. With a 500W rear-hub motor, the Simple Step-Thru had power when it was wanted/needed, but in most cases its throttle and pedal assist system (PAS) felt modest and gradual instead of punchy and overpowered.
We appreciated the bike’s reserved nature, though some riders may prefer the ability to adjust its speed limits. Additionally, we found the bike’s motor engagement to be somewhat inconsistent.
Fans of beach cruisers will, however, find many characteristic features present on the Simple Step-Thru, including a relaxed and comfortable riding position. With a thick, cushioned saddle, wide handlebars, and upright positioning, we found the bike to be thoroughly comfortable and enjoyable to ride.

SixThreeZero Simple Step-Thru 500W Review: Speed Test
I tested the Simple Step thru on a flat section of our local bike paths to determine its maximum speeds in each of its 5 pedal assist settings. The bike’s motor uses a cadence sensor to engage the motor and its controller has pre-set speed limits in each setting. It ships as a Class 2 with throttle and pedal assist up to 20 mph, so I expected even increases in speed and power as I stepped through the PAS.
With a casual pace and no pedal assist, I reached 8.6 mph comfortably and easily. Upon activating the PAS, I did not feel any significant push from the motor in the two lowest assist settings. I reached a maximum of 8.8 mph in PAS 1 and 9.1 mph in PAS 2, though I attribute the slight differences in speed more to changes in the path than the motor itself (more on that soon). The motor engaged more noticeably in PAS 3 and above; I pedaled up to 11.1 mph with reserved power and then sped up more significantly to 15.5 mph in PAS 4 and 19.5 mph in PAS 5.
Upon further testing, I found that the motor would propel the bike up to roughly 5.5 mph in PAS 1 and 9.0 mph in PAS 2. With these low speeds, it made sense that I felt no impact in my formal test; my pedaling exceeded the point at which they would be helpful.
With that in mind, we feel that the current speed settings will be appreciated by newer, less-experienced, and senior riders. The ability to adjust and change the bike’s power settings would likely appeal to a younger or more experienced audience, so we encourage Sixthreezero to add this feature in the future.
Based on our test results, the lower end of the PAS seems best for riders seeking a slower pace or a more natural analog-bike-feel. Riders who prefer an easier, faster ride should look to the higher assist settings in PAS 3 and above.
The bike’s throttle was capable without being punchy; the bike could achieve a similar max speed of roughly 19.5 mph with gradual, steady acceleration.
Overall we appreciated the distribution of power and speed across the Simple Step-Thru’s PAS; each setting felt distinct once we understood the preset speed limits. We liked the generally reserved feel of the bike with both its throttle and pedal assist system; it felt firmly under control at all times.
SixThreeZero Simple Step-Thru 500W Review: Range Test
We tested the Simple Step-Thru’s real world range using the process described in the graphic above. Sixthreezero advertises a range of 20-40 miles using the external 48V, 500 watt-hour (Wh) battery; we were able to meet and slightly exceed this advertised range in both tests.
Using PAS 5 and PAS 1, we covered 22.0 to 40.5 miles on a single charge. Our tests took between 1 hour and 23 minutes and 4 hours and 42 minutes depending on the pedal assist setting.
Compared to other similar cruiser-style e-bikes we have tested, the Simple Step-Thru’s results were on the low side of average, but they make sense considering the bike’s specs. A majority of the similar e-bikes we have tested with 500W motors have been specced with higher capacity batteries than the Simple Step-Thru’s 500 Wh power source.
In reality, the Simple Step-Thru made effective use of its battery capacity; it was roughly 38% more efficient than we expected based on its motor and battery specs. We anticipated its PAS 5 test would last only an hour instead of the hour and twenty-plus minutes we clocked. Similarly, we estimated a range of only 16 miles instead of the 22 miles we actually measured.
We feel that the bike’s range is appropriate for its style and intended use. It has enough range to make a practical daily commuter or simply a casual ride for leisure purposes.
SixThreeZero Simple Step-Thru 500W Review: Hill Test
In both portions of the test, the bike succeeded at making the climb. On throttle it reached the top of the hill in 1 minute and 58 seconds while traveling at an average of 9.2 mph. Using PAS 5, we climbed in 1 minute and 43 seconds at 10.5 miles per hour.
The Simple Step-Thru’s results were relatively average when compared to similar beach cruisers we have tested. It met our expectations based on its motor’s specs; the bike’s 500W motor reaches a peak of 960W and produces a maximum of 50 Newton-meters (Nm) of torque. This output, while relatively middle-of-the-road, allowed us to climb even steep hills steadily and with relative ease.
These test results were reinforced during my personal testing. I found that the bike could handle hills confidently using either its throttle or when pedaling. Even when adding a measure of my own effort through the pedals, only a low amount of effort was required; the bike’s motor was powerful enough to do most of the heavy lifting.
SixThreeZero Simple Step-Thru 500W Review: Brake Test
After gathering three Brake Test results using the process described above, we calculated the Simple Step Thru’s average stopping distance to be 21’6”.
This result is above average when compared to other cruiser-style e-bikes we have tested with mechanical brake systems. We attribute this to the bike’s Tektro brakes and 180mm rotors.
The Simple Step-Thru’s results are worth a closer look in comparison to the EVRYjourney 500W model from sixthreezero, which we reviewed in conjunction with the Simple Step-Thru. Both bikes have similar weight but different brake systems – the EVRYjourney weighed slightly more at 60 lbs but it was equipped with Zoom mechanical disc brakes that used 160mm rotors. We saw a significant difference in Brake Test performance between the two bikes; the EVRYjourney’s result was significantly longer at 26’6”.
In many cases we prefer hydraulic disc brakes due to their improved responsiveness, but we appreciate the cost effectiveness of mechanical systems. The Simple Step-Thru’s M280 mechanical disc brake system was clearly effective at bringing the bike to a stop quickly and safely.
SixThreeZero Simple Step-Thru 500W Review: Ride Quality
Comfort is typically a focus of beach cruisers, and the Simple Step-Thru matched the high bar set by similar e-bikes we have tested. Its wide handlebars and upright riding position encouraged a relaxed mindset. While the bike does not include a suspension of any kind, we did not mind its absence; the thick saddle absorbed most of the bumps when I encountered them.
The bike also had unexpectedly good handling; beach cruisers are not known for their responsive steering and maneuverability, but the Simple Step-Thru felt uncharacteristically nimble.
We liked that the bike was simple to operate as well. With a twist shifter on the right grip, and the throttle and control panel/display on the left, making adjustments felt quick, comfortable, and easy. Personally, I would prefer the easy readability of a central display, but this was only a minor complaint after finding my preferred PAS setting (most often PAS 3).
More importantly, I suggest that Sixthreezero upgrade the bike’s cadence sensor to improve the consistency of the motor’s engagement. I noticed that this could vary at times from roughly ⅛ turn of the cranks to more than ½ turn depending on speed. I appreciate that a throttle can help riders get up to speed, but a more responsive sensor would improve the feel for those who choose to pedal.
Otherwise, I found the Simple Step-Thru to be comfortable and enjoyable to ride; the bike’s feel and personality matched its looks and style.
SixThreeZero Simple Step-Thru 500W Review: Summary / Where to Buy
We think the bike’s reserved, manageable speeds will be appreciated by both senior riders and those seeking a more natural and controlled ride. However, some may find some of the preset limits too tame – so we encourage Sixthreezero to allow for more customization over the programming.
Additionally, we liked the bike’s handling and overall feel, but we feel that its motor engagement could be improved.
Critique aside, the bike offers an impressive degree of accessibility with its incredibly low step-thru frame design. Based on its feel, performance, and ease of use, we think it would be a great option for seniors, budget-conscious shoppers new to e-bikes, and riders seeking a controlled and relaxed bike that is easy to hop on and ride!
