Ebike News: Juiced go Step-Through, More Euro-lightweights, Serial 1 Head to Europe and Lots More!
In last week’s news intro I touched on how e-bikes in Europe tend to be lighter and pricier than in the US. So what happens? The very next week arrive two European spec e-bikes that are both lightweight and around the extremely competitive price point of £1000 ($1385). That’s great to see, so congratulations to both both Pure Electric and Velotton on their light and attractively-priced e-bikes.Meanwhile in the US the march of the powerful hub-motored, big-batteried e-bikes continues, this week with the launch of Juiced’s Class 3 Cross Current X Step-Through.

SUB-$2000 CLASS 3 E-BIKE FROM JUICED
Juiced Bikes has just announced the updated Cross Current X Step-Through, a commuting and urban e-bike with an introductory price of just $1,999.
Juiced is known for producing powerful e-bikes and this model features a 750W Bafang hub motor rated at 80 Nm of torque with a programmable console that allows it to be configured as a class 2 (20mph assist) or class 3 (28mph assist) machine.
It also features torque and cadence-based sensors, hydraulic disc brakes, hard-wired front and rear LED lights and a rack and fenders.
So what’s new? There’s a new step-through frame aimed at making the bike more accessible to riders due to its lower step-through height. The 778 Wh rated battery is actually a bit smaller than the massive 1,000 Wh battery found on the traditionally-framed CrossCurrent X, though still pretty big in e-bike terms.
PURE ELECTRIC’S FIRST E-BIKE – 38.5 lb SINGLESPEED
Pure Electric are a UK-based high street retailer who began life in 2020 and whose focus is firmly on electric urban mobility products – think e-scooters and urban e-bikes and e-cargo bikes. Since their UK launch they have rapidly expanded and now have a European presence, with stores in Paris and Madrid.
Having had their own brand e-scooters for a while (the company were initially called Pure Scooters) they have just launched their first e-bike, the Pure Flux One – a lightweight single-speed belt drive with a claimed weight of 17.5kg / 38.5lbs.
The price of £999 is as notably low as the weight and it also aims to be maintenance light, with an oil-free Gates Carbon Drive on the rear hub motor. Other features include a 252Wh battery and mechanical disk brakes.
Pure Electric also launched The Pure Air Pro LR – described as their longest-range scooter with a 35 mile plus range.
Although their use on roads is yet to be legalised, there are estimated to be between 150,000 and 200,000 e-scooter owners in the UK.
VELOTTON ANNOUNCES LIGHTWEIGHT E-BIKES
Polish company Velotton, the company behind the Vekkit retrofit kit, have just introduced a range of lightweight e-bikes with a claimed weights starting at 16.9kg / 37lbs and priced at €1390. Options are based around two types of frames, classic road and mixte (sloping top tube for easier mounting), as well as three battery mounting options – in the front basket, in the rear basket and in the pannier bag.
The front hub motor is described as ‘light but powerful’ and intriguingly there is also what Velloton describes as an electronic brake system – when you brake using a rear brake the front motor hub brakes too – such so-called regenerative braking is usually associated with much larger, heavier gearless motors than the one that Velotton look to be using here. It also features a rear coaster brake.
If that weight figure is true it’s particularly impressive as the bikes feature a 360Wh battery, a very respectable size for such a light bike (though it may well refer to the smaller battery option – it’s not quite clear from the press release…).
SERIAL 1 ROLL INTO EUROPE…..AND GO CUSTOM
Serial 1 Cycle Company – originally a spin-off from Harley-Davidson but now an independent company – has partnered with Harley-Davidson Europe to bring a range of its e-bikes to Harley-Davidson across the pond, including ones in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.
Prices for the urban styled range start at €3,499 ($4,140 or £2962) and they will be EU/UK spec with a max assist speed of 15.5mph.
Unusually for the e-bike world (as compared to the motorbike world) Serial 1 recently announced a one off e-bike, a Chopper-inspired version of its Mosh e-bike, which was auctioned off to the highest bidder and attracted a winning bid of US$14,200!
PRICE-CONSCIOUS EBFEC E-BIKES HEAD TO THE UK
EBFEC bikes are already on sale in many EU countries European countries but it seems the Polish company’s e-bikes are now heading to the UK. The production base of EBFEC is located in the west suburb of Polish city Wrocław.

3D-PRINTED FRAME SPECIALISTS URWAHN GO GRAVEL
3D-printed frame specialists Urwahn from Germany have just announced what they claim to be the first 3D-printed gravel e-bike, the Waldwiesel.E.
It uses the MAHLE ebikemotion rear hub motor system and Shimano GRX 1-11-speed derailleur shifting.
SHOTGUN KID’S SEATS LAUNCH E-MTB COMPATIBLE SEAT
Bicycle Retailer just bought us the news of how child seat specialist Kids Ride Shotgun have launched a new a new model, the Shotgun Pro. ‘It’s designed to have zero frame contact and fast fitting and removal. Because it doesn’t touch the frame, it’s also suitable for e-MTBs with bigger downtubes, something the original shotgun seat couldn’t accommodate’ says Bicycle Retailer. Suggested retail is US$250.

TERN’S $45,000 GIVE BACK GRANTS
Folding bike and e-bike specialist Tern recently announced the grant recipients of this year’s Give Back Program, whereby every year, Tern donates at least 1% of the previous year’s net profits to social or environmental causes.
Tern say ‘the Give Back Program reflects Tern’s commitment to supporting groups that are working towards a better, healthier, and more equitable planet.’
The three nonprofit organizations selected are:
World Bicycle Relief – Sends bikes to developing nations.
PeopleForBikes – US based bike advocacy group that regularly features on EBR. Their mission – ‘ To get more people riding bikes more often. To make bike riding better for everyone.’
Trips for Kids.Marin-based but with a network throughout North America helping underprivileged kids develop through bikes.
Tern’s donations to the three organizations totals more than US$45,000.
