If ever a bicycle or e-bike company’s products have inspired a loyal fanbase, the London-based Brompton takes the proverbial cake. With over 100k units produced each year, Brompton is the UK’s largest bike manufacturer. The brand’s unique and original 3-part folding design is iconic, making its bikes among the most portable and functional ever made.
The first Brompton folding bike was designed by the company’s founder, Andrew Ritchie, in his apartment in 1975. Ritchie refined his design as he produced and sold his bikes, but never deviated from building each one by hand. The tradition continues today, with each of the company’s analog and e-bikes being constructed by skilled technicians in its London factory.
This approach has paid off, with the brand’s 7-year warranty being a testament to its bikes’ long-term reliability. With over a million of its folding bicycles sold in its 50+ year history, Brompton has a devoted, well-established customer base. Its bikes are so popular that the company even sponsors an annual race where the best-dressed riders and those who can fold their bike the fastest are awarded in addition to those who cross the finish line first.
Over the course of its existence, Brompton’s lineup has evolved to meet the needs of different riders, though its iconic design is present in each model. In analog form, the company offers ultra-lightweight, simplified, performance-oriented, and gravel bikes in addition to its original model. After expanding into the e-bike market in 2018, it now has three electric models.
While our experience with Brompton’s e-bikes is limited, we found its products to be well deserving of their reputation as the gold standard of european folding bikes. See our reviews below to learn how Brompton’s electric models perform and compare to other folding e-bikes we’ve tested!
