Urtopia is a newer e-bike brand that made waves in the industry upon its debut in late 2021. The company’s first e-bike, a lightweight, highly conceptual design made of carbon fiber, earned over $3 million in funding via an Indiegogo campaign.
The company was founded by Dr. Owen Zhang, along with a group of cycling enthusiasts and engineers from Cornell, CMU, MIT, and UMN. Through the establishment of strong supply chains, the development of custom programming, and the integration of uncommon technologies, Urtopia aims to create sustainable, user-centric e-bikes that enable healthy and fun lifestyles.
Since its inception, the brand has expanded its lineup to include a range of light, visually appealing e-bikes for urban environments, and its different approach is obvious in each of its models.
The sleek, curvy Carbon 1 Pro, for example, was created in partnership with former BMW designer Mathis Heller and has an onboard ChatGPT system. As another example, the brand’s two Fusion models feature step-thru frames, a dual battery system, and the ability to equip dual motors.
In our testing, Urtopia’s bikes’ light frames, responsive pedal assist systems, and nimble handling have caught our attention just as much as their aesthetic.
