The heavy-hitters of the e-bike world, Class 3 e-bikes are the quickest and often most powerful among the three classes. The motor on Class 3 e-bikes, which are pedal assist only and do not have throttles, doesn’t cut out until you hit 28 mph. Some bikes in this class are also considered Class 2 e-bikes, as they have a throttle that stops working at 20 mph in addition to the pedal assist.
While one of the most popular classes of e-bike (because fast is fun), Class 3 bikes come with a small catch: They’re the most regulated class of e-bike and are often limited to road-adjacent bike lanes and some paths. The reason for this, at least in most U.S. states with e-bike laws, is the increased speed equates to more opportunity for risk. Speed is an important factor to consider when looking at this class of e-bike, as good brakes, solid tires and a stable ride are going to be important to keeping safe on the bike.
