Höganäs Selects AllCell as Battery Partner for New Electric Bike Drive System
Hoganas electric bike motor system will use AllCell Batteries.
This is a press release from Höganäs AB and AllCell Technologies.
Freidrichshafen, Germany – Swedish metal powder giant Höganäs AB unveiled the company’s new powerful and efficient electric bike drive system at the Eurobike 2012 show and announced the selection of AllCell Technologies as battery partner for the system.
A new entrant into the e-bike drive system market, Höganäs has been developing soft magnetic composites (SMC) for the electric motor industry for two decades.
Building upon the company’s experience as a major supplier to the automotive industry and history of high volume manufacturing since 1797, the electric drive system’s low energy losses and compact motor design are made possible by the Höganäs Somaloy® technology.
AllCell’s lightweight long-lasting batteries and their patented passive thermal management technology were selected as the perfect complement for the new drive system.
E-bikes with the Höganäs drive system and AllCell battery will be on display and available for test rides at Eurobike from August 29 – September 1 (Höganäs booth: FGO-103 or AllCell booth: ZH-313).
The Höganäs electric drive system combines outstanding performance and Scandinavian design, ready to provide improved mobility to a new generation of electric vehicles. By integrating the company’s popular Somaloy® SMC materials into e-bike motors, Höganäs has developed a truly superior product.
Its high efficiency extends battery life and consequently prolongs the driving range. Optimizing the entire system allows smooth and intuitive interaction between driver, drive system, and battery.
Following a rigorous vendor search, Höganäs selected AllCell for the benefits provided by AllCell’s proprietary phase change material (PCM) thermal management technology.
The AllCell PCM is integrated into each battery pack, absorbing and conducting heat away from the lithium-ion cells and playing the same role that complicated liquid cooling systems perform in today’s electric cars, but at a fraction of the cost. Because no other electric bike batteries have a thermal management system at all, AllCell’s batteries last 50% – 100% longer than analogous competitive batteries.
“We are very excited to be working with AllCell,” said Raissa Kruse, Höganäs Electric Drive Systems Manager. “Höganäs and AllCell share a common view on the importance of safety and robustness for personal transportation products. The Höganäs drive system in combination with AllCell’s battery solutions really provides great value for our customers.”
About AllCell Technologies
AllCell Technologies designs and manufactures lithium-ion battery packs for transportation and renewable energy applications.
The company’s patented thermal management technology allows production of compact, lightweight, and long-lasting batteries. AllCell’s thermal management technology is based on the use of phase change materials (PCM) to surround each lithium-ion cell, absorbing and conducting heat away to dramatically extend the life of the cells and prevent fire or damage to the battery.
AllCell’s products avoid the need for expensive, complicated, and inefficient active thermal management systems, replacing pumps, motors, and hoses with an elegant passive system that requires no energy to operate and has no moving parts.
About Höganäs AB
Originally a coal mining company founded in 1797, Höganäs has enhanced and refined its product range several times. Keeping a strong connection to mining and metallurgy, today Höganäs is the world’s largest producer of metal powders.
In the quest to push the limits of metal powder, Höganäs has explored many new application areas such as soft magnetic composites. These iron powder based composites are the key to lower energy losses in power electronics and electric motors.
The new Höganäs Electric Drive Systems business unit was created to commercialize these new materials in a revolutionary motor design. Utilizing more than 20 years’ experience of motor design for customers across diverse application areas, Höganäs is now offering proprietary drive system solutions.
The first groundbreaking products are drive systems for e-bikes and pedelecs, which will be closely followed by high–power systems for larger vehicles.
