Melbourne Australia: Free Electric Bikes! (Sort Of)

Dolomiti electric bikes for use in Australian sustainable transportation study.

This is a guest post from Daniel Billings of Dolomiti; an electric bike store in Melbourne Australia that is working hard to raise awareness of electric bikes in Australia.

Throughout Europe, commuters are ditching high petrol prices for eco-friendly electric bikes. We think it’s time this trend reached Melbourne.

To help spread awareness, we’re giving away 17 brand new SmartBikes worth more than $3000 each.

Well, we’re kind of giving them away. We’re looking for SmartBike Ambassadors to ride them for us.  Yes, you get to keep them 24/7 during the period of the trial. [Read more…]

Interview with Norbert Haller: German Electric Bike Designer & Bike Commuter

Norbert Haller, Electric Bike Designer

A while back I interviewed some electric bike and commuter bike specific store owners in the US to get their perspective on what it is like to run their stores and to see if these specialty shops are getting more people on bikes.  To follow that up I have embarked on a new adventure of interviewing people around the world who commute by bike/ebike.

To kick off the interviews I have Norbert Haller who is the lead designer at Ultra Motor (makers of the A2B electric bikes).   Norbert is an active bike commuter who lives in Berlin, Germany.  So with out further ado, here is my interview with Norbert:

How Electric Bikes/Trikes Can Inspire Us!

Electric Trike from Trinity Environ

The other day I got an email from Hung Ly, who owns Trinity Environ in Naples, Florida.  He has been inspired by helping others enjoy riding a bike or a trike again.  I liked his email and I want to share it with you.

The NuVinci Shifting Experience: NO GEARS!? [Video]

The NuVinci N360 Hub on Electric Bike

Imagine you are riding your electric bike along and you hit a hill. Instead of shifting the gears on your bike you simple twist the grip shifter a little (like a volume dial on your stereo) to make climbing that hill a little easier and find that perfect gear ratio.  That is what the NuVinci drivetrain system is all about and more!

In this video I interviewed Chris from NuVinci about their “Continuously Variable” drivetrain to get an idea of what the advantages are over typical “geared” drivetrains and why the NuVinci is a good fit for e-bikes. Even the dogs (in the background) were excited about the NuVinci system [Read more…]

Hills? What Hills? E-Bikes in San Francisco [VIDEO]

Here is a fun ebike video that has some great points about electric biking in San Francisco.  It is an ad for a shop in San Fran but it is so well done that I wanted to share it with you.  It’s gotta a catchy tune too!

Ebikes make a lot of sense for a hilly city like San Francisco where normal bike commuting would be a sweaty endeavor!   Don’t get me wrong, I think ebikes are great for all places, it’s just that for places that have a lot of hills and/or wind they make even more sense.

Check out the video below: [Read more…]
