Quantifying Bicycles’ Economic Contribution

The U.S. House of Representatives have just passed the Outdoor REC (Recreation’s Economic Contributions) Act, moving it one step closer to being signed into law by the president.

As suggested by its title, The Outdoor REC Act would require the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Labor, working with federal land management agencies, to provide statistics on the economic contribution of recreation to the U.S. economy – and that inlcudes bikes’ and e-bike’s contribution.

People for Bikes said:

‘We believe it is time for the bike industry’s economic statistics to be measured in the same way as other sectors such as the automobile, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Measuring the economic benefits of bicycling will demonstrate that investment in bike infrastructure leads to economic development, jobs and healthier communities. [Read more…]

The day described in Little Feat’s song “Old Folks Boogie” has arrived – When your mind makes a promise that your body can’t fill.

The tough to swallow part is your brain doesn’t realize your condition. You want the landscapes, the solitude and the body workout with minimal car contact.

The world offers heaps of places for these things BUT your body needs a little boost to make riding a pleasure – not a pain. Today’s E-MTB’s offer up a Middle Way for the rider whose days of pure human-powered, self-supported touring have dwindled.

Besides the physical realities you’re fixing to put two kids through university and your moneybag has some limits. Rest easy – there is an answer! [Read more…]

Colorado Divide Electric Bike Adventure to 11,500 ft.

colorado divide electric bike 6By Charlie Gandy.

There is a place at 11,500’ elevation, deep in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, that I want to tell you about.

This place requires some mountaineering chutzpah to get to, and some high altitude attitude to thrive in.

So this time I got there, and back, on Tempo’s Carmel electric hybrid bike, and am inspired to share this story. [Read more…]

A Short Weekend Electric Bike Tour of the Finger Lakes [VIDEO]

A few weeks back I ran into my buddy Bryan while commuting home from work. After exchanging some typical DIY E-bike chatter about connector doo-dads and DC-DC converter hacks, Bryan mentioned that he wanted to do some touring of the finger lakes sometime soon.

Itching to break out my old-dog of an E-bike touring rig, I accepted a challenge and we hashed plan to head to Ithaca for the weekend. [Read more…]

There have been many occasions over the past 10 months on the E-Bike Cycle Tourists’ long distance e-bike journey that we have genuinely had to stop e-biking – and I mean STOP – to take in the amazing views on offer.

We did it!! After 901 hours of cycling over 220 days at an average of 75 kilometres per day through 12 countries in Europe and the United Kingdom, the e-Bike Cycle Tourists have finally set a new world e-bike long distance record.

The old mark of 16,047kms (9971 miles) – which was set by German Maximilian Semsch who circumnavigated Australia in 2012 – was finally passed on a sunny winter’s day in the Algarve region of Portugal much to our collective delight.

The achievement was celebrated with high fives, hugs and kisses, lunch at a restaurant, a photo session and, of course, a [Read more…]
