New Futuristic Electric Bike: The Smart Ebike [VIDEO]
Wow! This is a cool looking ebike! This is an electric bike from Smart (the same company that makes the tiny Smart car). It is very futuristic in looks as well as how it functions.
I am excited about this new development from an automobile company because it is adding a new perspective on ebikes from people outside of the bicycle industry. I think that ebikes are a great form of transportation for all types of people; from everyday cyclists to people who haven’t ridden a bike in years. Having input from the car industry is good because they have been designing vehicles for all types of people for many years and they can contribute their knowledge to help create better electric bikes. (Admittedly they did have help from Grace, a bicycle company :))
Here are some quick specs:
- There are 4 different pedal assist levels that provide these kinds of range: 30 km, 50 km, 70 km, 90 km. (18.5 mi, 31 mi, 43.5 mi, 56 mi)
- The electric assist speed tops out at 25 km/h (15.5 mph) which is the max allowed per European Union regulations. You can pedal to higher speeds but you won’t get any extra assist.
- 36v 9.6 ah lithium ion battery housed near the cranks. Can be fully charged in 2-3 hours
- Has regenerative braking. The battery is recharged when braking.
- Hydraulic disc brakes.
- Belt drive system instead of a typical bike chain. No oily chain!
- It weighs 22 kg (49 lbs). Pretty light for an ebike.
- The gear ratio automatically adjusts.
- Integrated front and rear lights
- Smartphone application integration: Speedometer, navagation system, a GPS tacking function that shows where the bike is parked, and when removed the bike is locked from being ridden. The smartphone is charged from the bike battery pack.
So far no word on price or when it will be available, but I will let you know as soon as I find out.
If you want all the info you can checkout Daimler’s site (the parent company of Smart) for more.
Here is a techno video of the design and construction of the Smart Ebike. It is cool to see the many different angles of this unique electric bike.
What do you think? Do you like this design? Would you be interested in having an ebike like this? Please leave your comments below.
Thanks!

Randy says
wow I hope this isnt too expensive. I wonder if you can run it at full electric? and at what range?
Pete at Electric Bike Report says
Hi Randy,
No word on price yet (I don’t think it will be cheap!).
Currently the bike will only work in pedal assist mode and will get 30 km, 50 km, 70 km, 90 km. (18.5 mi, 31 mi, 43.5 mi, 56 mi) in the 4 different assist levels.
Maybe they will make a electric throttle version for the US and Canadian markets where that is allowed and still considered a bicycle.
I will let you know when I know more.

This is excellent. I would love to have one of these, as long as the $$ tag doesnt make it a ripoff.

I would buy one today pretty much regardless of the price, but I assume it will be years before it is available in the States.
Pete at Electric Bike Report says
Hi Jerry, Yes I could be a while until that bike is available. When
it is I will definitely let everyone know!

Wow that smart ebike is way better than the car they offer. Man that is a nice bike. Any idea of when these are coming out? and What sort of price range they will be at?
Pete at Electric Bike Report says
Hi Dave, I haven’t heard when they will be available or what the price will be but when I do I will post about it.

I must admit that is one fantastic design! At first it looks over the top but take a good look at it! It is well thought out I bet it saves alot on the weight! My preference would be the more practical one meant for the city with the fenders and lights. That frame grabbed my eye! I believe with the fenders and lights it comes in under 50 lbs? I wonder about the weight of the racer above the design looks so extremely light? Also at the end of the video their looks to be another design also impressive! Strong light weight wheels are important and built in small headlight also impressive for safety. Not sure if it would be enough for night riding? But then you have the fendered model I spoke of.

Extremely pleased after 175km of riding my SMART electric bike. Dubbed this transportation tool the H2E as in Human Hybrid Electric or Hills Headwinds Eliminator – take your pick. WEB shopped for many weeks and could not find anything to compare at any price. Test rides available at your SMART/Mercedes Parts Department.
